About
The New York State Capitol has served as the seat of government for New York since the 1880's. Over 125 years old, the building is a marvel of late 19th-century architectural grandeur. Built by hand of solid masonry, it took 5 architects and 32 years to complete. Over the years meticulous restoration has been done to maintain and protect the Capitol for future generations of New Yorkers.

    Different from other Capitols
The exterior is beautiful and so much different from other Capitols, the interior is amazing too (except some really plain corridors). The upsetting part was that some rooms that are typically open to the public in other Capitols were locked here (for example, where the Senate resides). There are some renovations going so some parts are closed to public

    Great Architeucture and History
Visited here when it opened in the morning to avoid any crowds. Not into group tours so I did my own walk through. Lots of interesting architecture thorough out, especially the staircases. A couple of them really felt like they should have been in a Stephen King movie. A lot of history in here too, highlights for me was the Battle Flag collection and a couple links from the chain that the American Revolutionists put across the Hudson River to stop the British ships. The security staff here was very friendly and helpful too. Had a great talk with one of them about some of the history and events that occurred here. Overall had a great visit and recommend it if your into history and/or architecture.

    Worth a visit!
The New York State Capitol building is full of hand carved detail unlike anything I’ve seen before. The tour was free and our guide was fabulous! She was knowledgeable about the construction of the building and pointed out many unique details. It’s well worth a visit. There is also a neat I Love New York sign on the plaza across from Capitol- great photo opp!

    NY. State Capital tour
Had a wonderful time, the downtown area was clean and we felt safe. The tour of the Capital is worth doing. Very imformative. Across the road is the NY. Museum. Very nice also. plan for a full day. Food in cafeteria was decent and reasonable. You can go in winter time also, there is a underground walkway. Easy to get around.

    Great tour and guide
Awesome tour guide . Over an hour and 15 minutes. So informative. One of the best tours we’ve taken of state capitols. Only problem…. Good luck finding a parking place when the visitors parking lot is full.

    A very unique building!
I took the one-hour guided tour of the Capitol (self-guided visits are also available). The tour included all aspects of the building - including its history, architecture, three incredibly ornate staircases, elevator, governor's reception area, Senate and Assembly chambers, and the Hall of Governors. The guide was informative and I really enjoyed the tour. On the Empire Plaza outside the Capitol building, you can ride to the top of the Corning Tower (42 stories) for outstanding views of the countryside.

    Take the Tour
We were in town for a concert, and did a bit of exploring. The capital building is an architectural marvel. Our tour guide Grant was outstanding, informative and personable. While you can walk around the building unguided, the tour provides an incredible amount of information.

Great free tours - see the two contrasting architectural styles
Have been in the building many times, but never taken a tour. Went on noon tour - highly recommended. Great guide with lots of knowledge. Saw both chambers, governor's area, the famous staircases and a description of the two architects who designed the building in two very different contrasting styles. Highly recommend the on; hour tours at 10, noon and 2 pm.

Amazing architecture, the finest building in Albany.
We were here on a very hot day. June 3, 2024. The front of the building was blocked off by steel fencing. Not sure why. Interestingly enough, the architect Isaac Perry also designed the Phelps Mansion in Binghamton, NY, which we did do a tour of. So here we just relaxed in the park in front of the building sitting in the shade and admired the design and watched capitol employees come and go from some unseen side doors.

    Stunning....
We took a noon tour of the building; and it was a wonderful experience. Our guide was knowledgeable, informative, accommodating and responsive to questions. Her narrative brought the structure's engrossing history, amazing architecture, and beautiful artistry to life. Being the legislature was not in the session on the day we chose (a lucky happenstance); we were able to access both chambers and immerse in the craftmanship and detail. Also, the hallways & stairways were uncrowded, and able to be leisurely navigated. We were also impressed by the amount of artwork displayed along the corridors. The tour was a great orientation to this location; but one can spend much more time, to truly appreciate what is available. As the northern most point of our 10 day Hudson River Valley exploration; viewing this stunning architectural masterpiece, was a real highlight.

Went on the Ghost Tour of the Capitol around Halloween 2019. The building has hand carved animals and people throughout. The marble floors and great halls are elaborate and covered with depictions of historic events and times. The Ghost stories were an added benefit. Learning about the spirits that are rumored to travel freely around, greatly enhanced the lure of the stately structure.

I walked in with bike clothes late in the day, missing the last tour. Staff friendly, assisting with getting me and some bike stuff through screening and providing a map and suggested tour route. It's a beautiful building to tour on your own. There are lots of displays describing restoration projects and what is in the building. The senate chambers were locked, but it appeared that a representative was talking to a school group in the lower chamber. An employee/guard noticed me looking in and motioned I could come in. There is also a park and other buildings and displays across the street. This activity is FREE!

What a wonderful building. We spent a few hours here, through security screening due to it being a place of work, then greeted by a kind lady who provided a map. We caught a lift to the 4th floor and worked our way down. Beautiful architecture, fascinating exhibits, and the staircases, just wow. The corridor with a painting of each Govenor and a little info about each was fascinating. Lovely library. There are guided tours but we enjoyed pottering around by ourselves.
