The New York State Capitol has served as the seat of government for New York since the 1880's. Over 125 years old, the building is a marvel of late 19th-century architectural grandeur. Built by hand of solid masonry, it took 5 architects and 32 years to complete. Over the years meticulous restoration has been done to maintain and protect the Capitol for future generations of New Yorkers.

Not only is the Capitol beautiful architecturally, it has beautiful paintings in the New York Hall and a great exhibit of portraits of all of the NY governors, including their contributions to their terms and a good timeline although no the wall that helps you understand what was happening when each man was in office. Beware that the parking can... More

I used to work in the Capitol building and found it to be very informative to learn some of the history of the building I worked in. The Million Dollar Staircase and Senate Chambers are the highlights of the tour! You will be informed and learn something new! Great for school class trips for elementary and middle school grades.

From the stone carvings to ornate painting to halls laden with artwork...the restored and beautifully maintained building is an amazing place to wander around. A guided tour will bring many details to your attention as well as provide some fascinating stories. It's worth it to just wander and get lost and explore every floor, every staircase, every nook and cranny.... More

First thought after seeing this is building is that it looks similar to The plaza hotel in New York city. Sadly I did not get inside to see what this place have hidden. Only took some pictures in the front. Love the surrounded parks anyway, hope I could come back for leisure and loiter.

Impressive architectural structure with a storied history that is related by volunteer guides during hour long free tours. Extensive art collection representing all of New York's counties. Portraits of all governors with interesting anecdotal information and an historic timeline. You get to see all legislative corridors and chambers in their opulent glory. Sculpted busts along the hallways and stairwells are... More

I just took pictures of this building at night and in the day time, so beautiful and historic. I have been coming to this building since I was a child just to take pictures by myself or with friends and family as well. There have been times as an adult where I actually had to do business in this lovely... More

One of the most unique interiors I have ever seen in a capitol building (and at age 24 I've been to around 23). I, for one, love the post-apocalyptic setting of the whole thing, so its simple monolithic stature is not to be missed.

I walked over from Albany Medical Center to the Concourse and then the Capitol building. I asked the front desk man if I could hop on a tour, but he said the last tour had left 20 minutes prior. He showed me the pamphlet with a map and gave me advice where to start to wander, and said if I... More

Late Review - My family and I like to visit the capitols of each of the state we travel. We typically do not have the time in our itinerary to go into the buildings and take formal tours so we mainly just walk the grounds. The NY capitol building is awesome. Surprisingly different from a lot of capitols while at... More
