- teddy5877Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia355 contributionsNegombo beachA huge wide beach with reddish sand. Close to Colombo Airport. As reported by many other reviewers, it is a working beach and mainly visited by locals and their families. I visited out of season and noted very few tourists. I was approached by some locals trying to sell things, but a polite firm no generally does the trick. There was evidence of rubbish but it wasnt the worst beach i have encountered. Sea can be rough and swimming is not always possible. There are a hand full of bar/restaurants further back overlooking the beach. these are mainly frequented by tourists. lots of hawker stalls on the beach area selling mainly snack foods. There were no sunbeds or umbrellas that i could see. Worth a quick walk in the early evening but not a relaxing sunbathing/swimming beach.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 September 2023
- Tom SGlasgow, United Kingdom121 contributionsSand between your toesA beach with a lot of potential but needs work. The sand is nice and the sea very pleasant, but getting from one to the other meant negotiating a tricky slope ( we're pensioners ). The sea has strong waves so not ideal for swimming but nice to sit at the edge and let the waves wash over. Only a couple of beach shacks offering sunbeds, food, drink and WiFi. We used Sea Look which can be found down a lane opposite Queen's Restaurant on Lewis Place. They don't charge for the beds and the food is reasonable. Toilets are fine as well. No loud music from them and a peaceful way to spend the day.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 January 2024
- BobsHols99Livingston, United Kingdom121 contributionsGreat value and good fun.Sri Lanka is just getting back on its feet after covid and then a bomb attack decimated the tourist industry. This is an excellent time to visit. People are desperate for tourists to come and are very welcoming. The exchange rate is also very attractive…we got 406 rupees/£ at the airport which is the best place to exchange. We stayed at the Heritance hotel for 5 nights at the end of our three week visit. The hotel was excellent. This is the Main Street of Negombo and is gradually coming to life as restaurants and shops get busier. The place looks better at night when everything is lit up. There are many tourist souvenir shops and bars restaurants. Terrific value for money. Our fav restaurant was Boho half way up the street and then Prego right across the road from the hotel. There are other restaurants highlighted on Apple Maps but either had changed name or have yet to reopen. Heritance have developed a restaurant and Swiss cafe right across from the hotel. In our 5 days there we didn’t see anyone use either. The restaurant has a Middle Eastern menu, I suggest this was a big part of the problem. The souvenir shops we used all offered discounts without asking. We loved Diane’s just across from the Gelato cafe. We met the owner and it turned out she had visited U.K. and Edinburgh where we come from. Lovely lady…give her your business. We also used Maya which had some great hippy chic clothes but the staff need a shake to get them away from their phone screens….it was also full of moths and mozzies the night we were there. The beach itself is public so you share it all with the locals and it gets very busy at weekends. During the week it’s perfect for some yoga on the beach early morning or just walking off breakfast. You will get approached by tat sellers but just be polite but firm. Don’t be rude, they’re just trying to make a living. Finally the folk have seen really hard times over the last few years. So be prepared to tip. A little goes a long way for them. If we are at a small hotel we will “adopt” a waiter or pool guy and ensure they get a decent tip at the end of our stay. If we all did that it would make a huge difference to their families and be a great incentive to improve their understanding of service. Go, you’ll love it.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 February 2024

This is a quieter beach front as compared to the Galle Face Beach. A nice place to relax on the beach; enjoy the sea breeze; enjoy the sunset view with peaceful surroundings. We were told by our driver/ guide that Negombo is usually a starting point or ending point of Sri Lanka trip since it is closer to the International Airport. We were so glad that we made Negombo as our last destination during our Sri Lanka Trip as it is indeed a relaxing place to end the trip after the extensive tour around Sri Lanka Island.

Stayed in goldi sands hotel right on the beach from with a sea view of this beautiful beach. Morning is very pea full all you can hear are the birds and see squirrels running around in the trees. Afternoon the you see people chilling on the beach then in the early evening it comes to life with locals play volley ball, football and even weddings. Lovely to just sit and watch the world go by

We visited Negombo beach, the bit outside Goldi sands. It is the most filthy and disgusting place you can find. The plastic pollution is appalling on its own but in addition an army of stray dogs patrol the beach leaving their mess. Also they seem to now have local dog walkers who use the beach as a toilet and instead of picking up they just kick sand over it.
All this filth while an army of idle beach vendors patrol the hotels hoping to sell over priced rubbish to tourist at ridiculous prices.
Can someone not convince this idle lot to clean the beach and earn some money doing a real job rather than sitting under trees all day long.
It is perhaps ironic the authorities make such a fuss of the plastic nurdles. It is the least of their problems.
Clean up your act or tourist will go elsewhere.

Very dirty beach.
We stayed at jetwing beach, Negambo.
If you love the sea & sand this is not your destination.
This beach is so dirty , don’t walk without slipper’s so many broken glass & plastic, very important to understand this beach is very generous to swim since very high level of ocean currents.
Our family didn’t go to the sea or you find so difficult to take few steps in this beach it’s so dirty & dangerous too, we r very disappointed.
Be very careful if you walking on the beach bikes & ATV they ride very fast , most dangerous situations is the SUV & CARS driving very fast in this beach.
You cannot sit & relax on this beach lot of local crowds be extra careful with your belongings.
Try to avoid this beach if you can otherwise you will be very disappointed.

I have lived in Sri Lanka for years, but I recently moved to Negombo for family needs. It's the worst place on the whole island. The people of Negombo are extremely racist and dishonest, even if they pretend to be nice waiting to take your money. prices for foreigners (Tuk tuk, private shops, fruit and vegetable stalls etc) are tripled compared to local prices. Be careful and don't get robbed by these scoundrels.

The setting, sand, views and people are fantastic. It is just such a shame it is dangerous to bathe and the sand covered in litter. To be honest we did see a group of 40 or more people clearing litter one evening but the next day it was covered again.

Negombo is a coastal gem with a unique blend of history and vibrant beach life. The town's golden sands, lined with palm trees, offer a perfect spot to unwind, while the gentle waves invite you for a refreshing dip. One of the highlights is the sight of traditional fishing boats, a nod to Negombo's rich maritime heritage.
Its vibrant history is reflected in landmarks like the Old Dutch Fort, adding a touch of the past to your visit. Whether you're savouring fresh seafood or simply enjoying the sunset, Negombo beautifully captures the essence of Sri Lankan coastal charm. Plus, being just a few minutes from the airport, reaching this coastal area is incredibly easy.

I arrived in Negombo around 9am, as it was too early to check in to my hotel I dumped my bag and headed to the beach to explore.
From the moment I set foot onto the beach I was continuously hounded by numerous locals, each trying to sell me something - either a boat trip, or various wares they were trying to flog.
I just wanted to be left alone, explore, feel the sun on my skin, and enjoy the views. But I didn’t get one minutes peace. After about half an hour I’d had enough and left the beach.
Yes, they’re relatively friendly, but it’s just damn annoying! When one of them is talking to you, you can see about four or five other vendors circling, waiting for them to leave, so they can then pounce. Not a good experience, unfortunately.

Went to the beach for xmas holidays and it was pretty crowded with locals which is fine but they threw thrash everywhere. It is a large beach with grainy yellow sand, but unfortunately several insisting salesperson trying hard to make you buy bracelets while talking about money to support his kids. So not a place to chill - I went once and never again.

Looking for a nice affordable family hotel in Negombo or surrounds, preferably on the beach for a family of 5 with 3 kids under 14. Nothing over priced. Any suggestions?
Written 30 March 2018
It’s hard to judge affordable, however a very nice hotel was Goldi Sands. Food was good and entertainment on. However I would not recommend staying in Negombo, there are nicer places.

Is there a place I can kite surf? I wanted to surf but there are no surfing schools around and had researched about kite surfing for this area but not sure of where to go. Thanks.

I think you can but the southern beaches are more suitable and popular. Try any place between Galle and Dondra like Unawatuna or Mirissa!

My family and I have a full day to waste before our flight. I have been told that a good option would be to hire a day room somewhere on negombo beach, where we can chill, eat and clean up before our night flight. Can anyone recommend somewhere? Thanks!

Preferably chose a good Hotel facing Sea. I would personally suggest Jetwing Sea as we stayed there. You will find the boats and other activities at the site

Where's the best place to see in 2017 in Negombo?
Written 31 December 2016
Beach side is nice, but not as nice as the beaches on the south coast!
A way up north of Negombo you'll find a lot of nice places to stay, very good restaurants and if you like some good ayurveda spas (I can recommend JCs Beach Villa and Ayurveda Spa)

Is water clean and s it swimmable in the month of January - any comments on Jetwing Sea Hotel?
Written 31 July 2016
Hi , Its not usually advised to swim in the sea. The water is clean, but better to sail on it rather than swim in it.

Здравствуйте, а расскажите какой пляж Вы можете охарактеризовать как самый красивый и со спокойным океаном?
Written 26 January 2016

How far is negombo is from CMB airport
Written 23 December 2015
6 kilometers to Negombo Town from Colombo International Airport.
8 kilometers to main Tourist Beach area of Poruthota Road and Lewis Place where good hotel accommodation, restaurants, bars etc are located.
It would take 20 - 30 minutes by taxi or a Tuk Tuk.
