The trek through the Ngorongoro Highlands into Lake Natron is one of the most off-the-beaten-path destinations in Northern Tanzania. The hugely popular parks of Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are just around the corner, but you will have this area largely to yourselves. Additionally, you have the opportunity to climb Ol Doinyo Lengai, the world's only active carbonatite volcano. The landscape surrounding Lake Natron is unique in the world, as are the relatively untouched Maasai villages in this area.

Let me start by saying that I have always dreamed of a safari trip to Tanzania. I told my husband of this dream and he decided to surprise me by putting together a 2 week safari/beach birthday trip for us. I’m not going to lie, I was a bit worried about leaving him to plan it on his own (I’m always the one who plan/book our vacations). Thankfully he chose to book it with Duma Explorer, and I could not have been happier! Every single detail was thought and taken care of! From airport transfers, to the registrations in the national parks (I didn’t even know we needed that!), and the location of the lodgings, Stacy thought of everything which gave us (especially me) peace of mind and the opportunity to just relax. The hotels and lodges we stayed were absolutely beautiful with great views and delicious food. Our guide Isaac had over 25 years of experience, and you could tell by the way he could spot animals from a distance and know every detail about it (I’m sure he had superpowers). We saw all the big 5 and then some. We were more than happy with our experience, and I could not have asked for a better way to celebrate my birthday (Christmas and New Years too). This trip will be one I will never forget! Anyone who asks us how to book a safari trip to Tanzania, Duma will be my one and only answer. This is a very happy and satisfied customer!

After dreaming about an African safari for several years, I finally took the leap and started planning in November of 2019. After discussion and quotes from several different tour operators we chose Duma Explorers, in part because of their responsible tourism, but primarily because of Stacy who was so responsive, patient with changes, and offered many suggestions that ended up being absolutely perfect for us. I knew I wanted to visit during the green season because the photography is so much better, but lower rates and less tourists also factored into the decision. The unforeseen addition of COVID 19 resulted in an almost unbelievably exclusive safari experience. Although I would have preferred a November start date, work obligations forced us to go in early December instead. Stacy’s input was extremely valuable in our choice of camps as well as the number of days to spend in each area. Ultimately we chose to stay in 2 of the 3 camps owned by Duma Explorers and both exceeded expectations in accommodation, cuisine, and particularly the friendly and attentive staff. I highly recommend Duma Explorer and cannot wait to travel with them again! I had not requested a specific guide, although I had read many reviews regarding how wonderful Isaac is so I was secretly thrilled to find him awaiting us at the airport! The reviews are spot-on about his warmth, knowledge, patience, and humor. His keen eyes resulted in fantastic sightings without another vehicle in sight, or in the case of one leopard, another vehicle drove right past! We spent 8 days plying him with questions about the land, wildlife, people, and culture which he unfailingly answered. His knowledge of animal behavior meant that we stayed to witness things such as a cheetah kill after other vehicles had moved on. At the end of our safari it felt as if we were saying goodbye to an old friend! .

Our trek with Duma was absolutely incredible!!! It's crazy how much thought, effort, and supplies goes into a Kilimanjaro trek (especially for a family of 8), but Duma takes care of it all. Our mountain guides were incredible - friendly, encouraging, patient, experienced, and safe. The porters were cheerful, hardworking, and really fun to talk with. Duma is a founding member of the Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project, meaning all of their porters are paid fairly, have a manageable load and good sleeping conditions, and eat three meals a day. This is NOT the case with other companies. Every effort was taken to make sure our trek was as comfortable and successful as possible. Absolutely loved it! Book with Duma!

GUYS....you gotta listen to me. Duma Explorer is the best. We did a 7 day trek up Kilimanjaro and a two-day safari with a family of teenagers and a 10 year-old. We have never done anything like this before, so we weren't sure how it was going to go. All of the guides were AMAZING!!! Genuinely honest and good people. Their English is great, and they even helped us learn a little Swahili while we were there! They were so so so helpful and we all made it to the top!!! They even helped us organize and pick up our COVID tests before our return flight. The camping gear they provided was top-notch as well. We felt so spoiled while we were on the mountain haha. I cannot stress enough how much I would recommend this company for your adventures in Tanzania.

We had 6-days camping safari in December 2020 with Duma Explorer and it was really impressive. They helped us to creat optimal program according our requirements and gave useful tips about optimal flights, transfers and recommended very cozy lodge in Arusha. Thanks for Stacy and Omary for the perfect organization. Our “field” team, guide Ebenezer and chef Jamal, are professionals and they really help us to open wild nature of Tanzania. For example we saw all big 5, different birds and rare animals like cheetah and leopard and got a lot of details for their life and behavior. Some recommendation if it’ll be your first safari: - It’s equator but nights are cool and even cold, warm closes is necessary - Showers in the public camps are very basic, you need your own soap, shampoo, towel etc. Camps in Serengeti and Tarangire have cold shower, in Ngorongoro there’s hot water. - It’s useful to have repellent, it was no mosquitos but a lot of CC fly - Lighters and batteries are necessary for the camping nights
