Decided to take a hike with a friend to Napuru, we got a guide via Inus wildlife safaris given the short notice to help us get around. It was a very good experience, the place is very scenic and beautiful, our guide (Innocent) was very friendly and helpful!! Very much worth the sore legs the next day😁

We did this hike to Mount Meru waterfall in January 2024 as part of our Tanzania safari. A beautiful but quite challenging hike. Partly over very high root steps, barefoot through the riverbed, etc. but it is absolutely worth it!
Tip: bring swimming shoes!

I had an amazing experience at the Napuru falls. The hike to the falls, passing through forest park and water bare foot was really an experience to remember. I took a guide and freely paid to support him. The natural beauty of a place well preserved was worthwhile for the evening. I also enjoyed the swing when i was living the park.
I also visited the nearby Themi water fall and leisure park.

Kilislope Tours and Safaris took me here after a safari in North Tanzania and this area is BEAUTIFUL!!! We started the hike at the edge of Arusha uphill through a nice, simple village. The people were carrying large banana leaves and firewood on their heads. It's amazing the difference between Arusha, who has some people who are friendly and this little village where almost everyone is super friendly:-). This change in less than a mile. I visited a VERY simple one family coffee growing plantation. The man very kindly showed me the process he uses. He only has one little machine to separate the (cherry) bean from the hull. The shack used for housing their sheep and goats is much different than in the US. He also grows bananas on his property. The hike down to the waterfalls is really steep, but really nice. Everything is sooo green you almost think you're in the jungle. Afterall, there are vines and one species of tree very similar to those I saw in the rain forest in South America. There were two young men who helped me cross the river numerous times, hoping to get a small tip, of course, of which I did. There are two parts to the falls-one that literally looks like it's in the jungle-one that's much bigger. They both were special little surprises:-). One suggestion: for the best lighting for photography, it's a good idea to get there before 10:00am if possible, otherwise your photos will look half light, half dark. There were some beautiful frogs we looked at, and a troop of blue monkeys came through as we were leaving the canyon. This is a MUST DO when in Arusha-one of those hidden gems of God's creation!!

In other reviews, a few others have referenced the Mt. Meru waterfall but I thought it deserved it's own page since it's a great day hike in Arusha.
The tour can be organized in Arusha and it's best to use a tour guide since an arrangement is required with the local authorities. We used Hakuna Matata Tours (https://www.facebook.com/Hakuna.Matata.Walking.Tours) and highly recommend them.
Waterfall location: -3.315746, 36.754503
Starting at the main Arusha-Moshi road it's 9km hike one-way with about 900m in elevation gain. You can also choose to take transport up closer to the waterfall. If you elect the full hike, it takes ~6hrs round trip. You walk through a number of small agricultural villages growing bananas, maize, coffee, and other fruit and vegetables. The entire landscape was lush when we hiked in November 2014. It's a wonderful glimpse into village life.
The waterfall lies just inside the nature reserve. Arusha town draws water from the stream so it's a protected area. It's a great place take a cool dip, eat lunch and relax before heading back down the mountain.
Highly recommended for a day trip from Arusha town.

We were not aware of this waterfall until a local guy told us about it. To get there you wind along dirt tracks through beautiful villages. Once up high you are surrounded by pine trees and u disturbed nature. The setting is beautiful as you wind down the paths to the waterfall. Young guys from the village will help you climb up and down in the hope of a small tip. The waterfall itself is huge, you can even climb up and stand behind it. Beautiful!

Went on Morani tours to coffee tour then on the the falls. Guide was terrific. The coffee tour was wonderfully entertaining as it was a small farm, family run and you see and take part in the entire process from roasting by small fire, cleaning etc and the drinking the coffee. Very fun experience. The we hiked to the falls. Fortunately it was dry and sunny. Would have hated doing it in the rain and likely would not have gone as it s hard enough slog and the train gets very narrow in places. Nice enough waterfall. After that got the most spectacular views of Kilimanjaro. Beautiful is an understatement. In total a lovely day.

Rather disappointed. We researched in advance and saw that entrance was approximately 20000TZS or, approximately, $9 USD for a foreigner. We spent $30 on the round trip can ride (because the roads were so bad) just to have the entrance person claim that we had to pay $15USD each AND take 2 guides each of whom we were expected to tip $15USD. Suddenly, our $18 waterfall hike (2 people) turned into a $60USD waterfall hike. We tried haggling but they claimed the price was firm. It simply was not worth the cost and so we skipped it and just ate the cost of the cab ride. Very disappointed.”

I’ve been living in Tanzania for 4 years and himing in the Meru Forest since I arrived. Over the weekend I was hiking with my dad and the park office said we needed permits. We kept hiking because I’ve never needed a permit for this hike. The park office sent 2 men with large guns and machetes after us to bring us to the office and make us pay! The men intimidated us with their weapons and escorted us back to the office. We didn’t know they were from the forestry as they had no uniform and no badges.
VERY UNPROFESSIONAL AND SCARY to intimidate and threaten toursits over a $10 permit.

It is a mystic place. Already the way to the waterfall is a big adventure. The entrance fee is for foreigners 20.000 Schilling. Persons with an invitation letter have to pay 15.000 Schilling (residence nothing). It is absolutely worth!
