About
Start your exploration of Cappadocia at this UNESCO World Heritage Site—a magnificent valley filled with rock-carved churches and monasteries. Built during the Byzantine period, this historical settlement was a home to monks and a pilgrimage destination. Be awed by the intricate construction of the cave rooms and churches etched into the honeycomb landscape. The museum’s highlight is the Dark Church which is decorated with brilliantly colored frescoes that have been carefully preserved. Visit in the early morning for fewer crowds and join a guided tour to learn more about the site’s history and architectural secrets. A separate ticket is required for the Dark Church. – Tripadvisor

- tinkle_24Northampton, United Kingdom1,781 contributionsOne of Cappadocia’s highlights,Most interesting rock formations resulting in churches being carved within. Lovely frescoes showing height of Byzantine art. You have to pay extra to get into the Church with the most frescoes. We did not go in because there was enough to see in the other churches.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- Hauf RLondon, United Kingdom5 contributionsvery nice placeAnyone visiting the Goreme Open-Air Museum in Cappadocia is instantly transported through time. The ancient rock-hewn churches, boasting vivid frescoes, reveal tales of early Christian civilization. Nestled amid Cappadocia's famed fairy chimneys, this museum is a fusion of history and breathtaking natureVisited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 October 2023
- Patric DSandbach, United Kingdom1,029 contributionsGreat insightsVery interesting museum ... essentially a series of rock dwellings but they show the eveolution of early Christianity across the region. Lots of different areas to explore, but there is a lot of steep walking and some moderately challenging passages. So take care ,, and if in doubt ... hold back!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023
- RajamoraLos Angeles, California136 contributionsCan’t Cap CappadociaThe Goreme Open Air Museum is a fairly small visitor park appreciable mostly to those who marvel at the works of nature and man. The expansive, wondrous tufa formations within and outside the official confines of the park form both backbone and backdrop to the worshipful frescoes laid on the walls of cave warrens carved out as living quarters by early Christian refugees. First worlders used to highly organized attractions should be mindful that this site is pretty much “au naturel” with little guidance, railings, secured walkways or signage. You gird your loins and walk, stagger and even crawl up to your cave goal, and attain your objective oftimes only by grace of the courtesy and helpful assistance of strangers. Definitely a dangerous venture if you’re targeting the Dark Cave and aren’t in youthful top shape. The frescoes are worth both the fee and the effort, especially if you luck into tolerant or invisible guards whereupon you can take as many photos sans flash that you can sneak in.Visited November 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 October 2023
- Geoff HSissinghurst, United Kingdom17,427 contributionsShould be on the "to do" list of anyone visiting CappadociaIt takes some time to get it into your head that this is an early monastic complex with churches dating from the 10th century. The paths round the complex are well maintained and easy to follow. Access to some of the churches is up fairly steep metal staircases. My wife and I are both in our mid-70s but we were able to manage them. Information boards dotted round the site provide the history of what you are looking at in English. There is one church, the Dark church, for which there is an extra charge but it is well worth it to see how they wall paintings are being restored and preserved. I think that the Goreme Open Air Museum should be on the "to do" list of anyone visiting Cappadocia.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 6 November 2023
- angelmusicmavenNew York City, New York254 contributionsAmazing historyThis park is a must see when you're in town. You can explore caves with churches dating back many centuries. You should be mobile enough for a little climbing and balance, etc. Due to some instabilities, some of the churches may be closed off- the Apple church was one highly rated church we were unable to go inside. Some cordoned off areas for the guard to sit were set with cardboard, which throws the vibe a little bit. There are markets by the entrance if you need a drink or snack or have limited souvenir time.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 November 2023

- Wood77Los Angeles, California3,285 contributionsExcavation of soft rocks over centuriesYou will have to do a lot of hiking uphill to view the rock formations up close in the Goreme Open Air Museum. Some paths are boardwalks and others are dirt trails. These structures were remnants of early Christian dwellings. One of the first structure encountered will be the nunnery. First floor was dining, kitchen, rooms. Second floor was chapel. Third floor was church. Another rock structure housed a church where over time outside walls have collapsed. There were additional structures to explore. The museum cafeteria was by the entrance. Limited food choices and way overpriced. Several other eateries were located just outside the entrance. However they don’t allow retry once you go outside for better and less expensive foods. So plan accordingly if you are hungry.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 December 2023
- PPPHyderabad District, India11 contributionsMust do !!Any trip to a new place is made exceptional on account of the people one interacts with....and our trip to Goreme, Cappadocia gave us lovely memories to bring back home. Goreme is a big contrast to the hustle and hustling of Istanbul. "Quiet efficiency' & "gentle hospitality" are what come to mind. We stayed at the Volare Stone Hotel and big thanks to Ibu for organising our hot air balloon ride and giving us tips to make our stay comfortable and peaceful. Also a big thank you to our wonderful guide Ali G for taking us around on the day trip. His humour & knowledge were a fun mix. Would highly recommend. We did the Hereke Green Tour. Traveller Tips : 1. There is more than one airport in Goreme (and Istanbul)... be careful when booking cabs and tickets. 2. Comfortable shoes with good grip are VERY important. (even Istanbul has steep, cobbled streets esp. the old city. Some places are slippery when the frost sets in). 3. Warm clothing if travelling in winter (holds true for Istanbul as well...it is a seaside city but weather is not tropical/warm).Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 January 2024
- ReviewerIIChalfont St Peter, United Kingdom421 contributionsA must see sight, shame about the extra charge for the Dark ChurchThis is a great site to see the ancient churches and homes of a lost time, I don't think you can come here without seeing it and it is the best place to see the dwellings as they were, especially if you don't have time to see the underground city. The entry fee was fine but I did feel ripped off having to pay and extra e6 each to access the Dark Church which is the best part of the museum. We enjoyed it very much but we were barely here 1.5hours. It is crowded, even arriving first thing (which I would recommend) and it is not easy to visit if you have physical issues, you need to be a bit fit. Overall a great place to visit.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 11 April 2024

I love the history of the place and highly recommend taking a walk to the museum instead of public transport.
The only problem with most sites in Turkey is that it's crammed full of tourists. It's very hard to imagine the tranquility that those who carved out these caves must've experienced when everyone is trying to get their instagram shots, boomerangs and videos for their amateur youtube vlogs.
You need to be strategic about how you walk through this museum. Everyone is taking photos and videos and everyone wants to be everywhere.
My advice is to take it slow. Rest often and just take it all in.
1 thing that you'll also find is that the better preserved sites are an additional fee. Save your money and go to the museum lower down the road with the same ticket instead. It's way better preserved that anything in the open air museum but, once again, also very full.

We visited on a relatively quiet weekday. The admission price is absolutely absurd for how small the museum was. It was an interesting visit but nothing special. I would have preferred to just venture off the beaten path and explore the caves that line the area without the tourist factor and self explore. Would not really recommend unless you already have a museum pass or are really interested into more tourist hotspots rather then going on your own adventure.

It was snowing during our visit since there was weather anomaly in Cappadocia. The view was quite amazing as if it was from one of the locations on Game of Thrones.
The stairs leading to the chapels inside the caves were pretty narrow with no handrail in several spots along the stairs. There was only one way to enter and to exit making it quite crowded at times. As it was snowing during our time there, the stairs become slippery too.
You surely need to wear suitable shoes for walking as you need to go through quite a few flight of stairs to visit the ancient chapels inside the cave.
Also be mindfull of the narrow stairs if you are travelling with young children and/or elderly people.
Please noted that it is forbidden to take pictures inside the cave due to risk of the camera flash damaging the centuries old paintings on chapel's wall. Kindly only take pictures when you are outside of the caves.
There were several cafes and souvenir shop inside the open air museum. The prices on those establishments was quite the standard of tourist attraction.

Went here during the Red Tour, which we had with an English speaking guide. Great experience walking around the caves and churches. The Dark church up the hill is extra to get it in to but I recommend the entrance as it was worth checking out even without the ability to take photos inside. The paintings were very well preserved and you can definitely see the set as it was supposed to be seen unlike

This was part of a tour organised for us by our agent in Istanbul (Efendi Travel). The local guide picked up my wife and myself from the hotel, and took us around local sights in a mini-bus (there were about ten people in the minibus, picked up from various hotels in Goreme). Highlight of the day, undoubtedly, was the Goreme Open-Air Museum. Truly amazing! If you have not organised a tour which includes this museum, get it done through your hotel front desk. I would NOT advise anyone who does not know Turkish to just wander around on your own. It may be a bit cheaper, but you would waste a lot of time. In any case, you would not know what you were looking at. The local guides can explain the history and background of the various churches, monasteries and convents hewn into the rock. This place is a delight for both history buffs and photo buffs. We were lucky, we went on a bright sunny day. I don't how dangerous it would be on a wet day, you would get badly hurt if you slip and fall. Talking of slipping: wear GOOD walking shoes, real sturdy ones, which grip your heel, and which would prevent you from losing your footing. There is a bit of climbing. NOT a place for someone in a wheelchair. Also, NOT a good place for someone with a stroller. Keep a sharp eye on little kids with you: they could easily get lost in the crowds, or they could fall. Good toilet facilities near the entrance. The place is HUGE, it would be simply impossible to see it fully, unless you spend several hours here. Most tour operators (like ours) allow just about two hours. Just enough time to see the highlights.

We visited Zelve Open Air Museum the day before, which is why the Goreme Open Air Museum was very disappointing for us. By comparison, GoremeOAM was 3x more expensive than Zelve, most of the sites inside Goreme OAM was closed, too many people were around, the sites that they allow taking pictures in were the boring ones. The ones with paintings were prohibited from pictures being taken. Also, there was one site where you have to pay extra to get in.
Basically, we were only there for only about 30 minutes and had managed to get around and see everything, except for the prohibited areas and paid sites. Compared to Zelve that took almost 2 hours to explore, GoremeOAM was not worth it. (Plus the ticket fee was too much for a 30-minute small-round tour).
The only thing GoremeOAM has that was better than Zelve was the colourful religious drawings.

We decided to stop in here on the way back from Avanos to Goreme. Desipite heavy snowfall overnight, we enjioyed exploring this place. The outdoor caves and rock formations were an impressive sight. Take care in snowy/icy conditions, as the pathways were very slippery in some sections. Good shoes/hiking boots are recommended. Entry is included on the museum pass. Buses are available from Avanos and Goreme for 5TL, expect to pay 30TL for a taxi to/from Goreme.

This is an amazing site. The entrance fee is hefty but it kinda slips from memory as one wanders through the site. Most of it is well-preserved and has attendants making sure everything remains intact. Some areas could do with a bit more attention to maintain the site for future generations

The museum was a very interesting place to visit. I loved the historic rock carved churches for the fantastical nature of their architecture alone. It's remarkable to think about them carving out these churches and houses from the rock. The admission fee was 100 lira just for the day pass with no frills, or about 10 euros. It was a fair price, however once inside we noticed that seemingly half or more of the churches and cave homes were roped off or had shuttered doors. It was raining during our visit, so we had the luxury of not much competition for the open spots.

Nice big area for sightseeing. Interesting history with all of the cave churches and frescoes. A little annoying that they make you pay extra to go into the dark church and don't let you take photos (even without flash).

Hello, how long does the visit take for the open air museum?
Written 11 January 2023
Hi, I'd say around 1-2 hours,I personally took 1.5 hours to go through that place but it depends on your timing(whether there are many people there at that time) and your own pace.

Could someone give me an idea about the visit in October/November?
Is this period good or bad for the baloon trip and the other sightseens in the region?
Moreover, is 2 days enought for Goreme? I'm worried about weather conditions cancelling the baloon trip, so I want to have 2 days for guarantee.

Ola Thiago! Acho q poderia fazer a pergunta sobre condicoes de voo de balao diretamente a uma empresa de balao. Fui no verao e me disseram q no inverno muitos voos sao cancelados. Boa viagem
