Matis Carpet Company, Kusadasi, Aydin, Turkey
In July of 2023, I had occasion to visit this company. Many spoke English quite well. They were very polite and courteous. They taught me much about Turkish carpet weaving. They showed many sizes, many materials, and many patterns. We decided to purchase one of the carpets that fit our size and color desires. The carpet was too large for us to take with us, so they arranged shipping from their store to our home in America and accommodated our delivery date requirements. The shipping company in America was fully engaged to ensure the safe receipt of the carpet, as well. All communicated with us, as needed, and we are now the proud owners of their artistic handywork. A great group of people to work with.

We were taken there by our guide. He told us in advance that he gets a cut from all sales which is usual in most places. The place is huge and has a huge collection of rugs of different types. We wanted two rugs and liked two but one needs to bargain to get the price down. We took pictures of the rugs we bought. Make sure the price includes shipping and customs. We told them to ship in two weeks since this was the beginning of our trip. The did everything they promised and we got our beautiful rugs.

I purchased a hand knotted wool on cotton rug through Matis. Recently, I had a very reputable local company in the St. Louis area clean my rug. They told me my rug was made in China NOT Turkey as claimed by Matis.

Be careful with this store. The travel agency highly recommended it but do not
believe anything they tell you. I bought a small hand knotted wool on silk rug. Since I was not convinced with the certificate I received, I had the rug evaluated by four different rugs stores in USA. All of them agreed Turkish rugs store are the one who deceive the tourists more than any other country in the world. Also that the price was high but it could have been worst comparing with other clients stories. At lease they agree that the rug was silk which was my major concern. The vendor gave me the certificate but I did not read it in detail. When I arrived to the hotel I realized the certificate did not state the material. When I called them they said they will send me another one by mail to USA since the computer that print them was not working. I demanded to have it delivered to the hotel through the help of our travel guide. Finally
it arrived late in the evening. Our bus departed Cappadocia the following day
early in the morning. Another advise is to check the label of the rug in the back. It is not sewed and it is easily removed. I think the vendor did it when he brought the rug
from another room. I did not notice at the purchase. Look at the picture closely. The fibers are torn of.

I visited Matis carpets in Goreme - Cappadocia this year as part of an organised G-Adventures tour. After a wonderful talk and demonstration about the whole carpet making process and tradition, the different types of rugs and designs along with a fascinating explanation and demonstration of traditional and modern dying techniques, how silk is produced and spun, the weaving process and finally we were shown examples of all the different types of rugs. Followed by tea and a Turkish liqueur.
At the end of what was at least two hours, there was a fairly enthusiastic effort to convince us to purchase a rug and some did. I was too overwhelmed by the huge range to even consider it at the time, but came back the next day to have another look. They offered to bring rugs to my hotel or provide a taxi to come back to the showroom. I needed to replace my old rug and so many of my friends said they bought a rug when in Turkey. The staff at s Matis were extremely helpful throughout the whole process and with the support of the Turkish government ship the carpets for free and the discount they gave for different types of payments were astonishing. Such amazing customer service! Needless to say I bought a big beautiful wool on cotton Turkish rug, in the Ottoman style made by a Cappadocian carpet weaving family who made rugs for the sultans. While I was a bit apprehensise about delivery, I was very happy with the professional way payment and delivery occured - like clockwork. They even got me to sign the back of the carpet, so I knew it was the same carpet I agreed to buy in the showroom - so they fully understand those type of concerns. I know I will always have great memories of that day at Matis carpets in Goreme - Cappadocia and my time in Turkey and will be reminded of it every time I look at or walk on my marvelous Turkish rug.

I bought a beautiful luxurious bamboo rug - what I received was a flimsy thin "mat" with the label I signed on the original rug simply stapled to the back of this very average replica. And there is a white fringe on this mat that is already starting to unravel. There was no fringe on the rug I was sold.
Buyer beware!!!! Please do not believe what they tell you.

Nope! Its on the wall. The design of this hand weaved Kilim done by villagers near the Syrian/Iraq border is awesome. It had been in their store for a number of years and the supply is not there anymore due to the fighting. This Kilim is beautiful. The animal designs actually are a close match to a lovely Hittite vase we purchased. We are fortunate to have such a Treasure from this store. They have one room out of many that just has Kilims and we bought this masterpiece! We went back and forth on the price and it all worked out!

We were given a guided tour on how wool and silk were processed in order how to use them for carpet weaving. Fascinating. And the selection and range of carpets is truly spectacular. Such exquisite designs.I wish I had the time and money to spend, although I did get a beautiful small blue wool carpet at an excellent price that I could easily carry all the way home. Do not miss this place.
