Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Another of those well worth seeing places in Gaziantep. Make sure you visit these priceless museums as you won't see things like this anywhere in the world.

Ancient mosaics can be found all over the Mediterranean. The mosaics in this museum are best preserved in the world. Have you seen the "Gypsy Girl" mosaic uncovered in Zeugma in 1999? The haunting look of the Gypsy Girl mosaic resembles the famous Afghan Girl of Steve McCurry-one of the most memorable images in National Geographic's history. They are from rescue excavations conducted by Gaziantep Museum and a number of international teams in an effort of emergency archaeology-a race against time in the last two decades. The site is in the area of the Birecik dam.
Zeugma ("Bridgetown") was the name of twin cities Apameia and Seleucia 50 km from Gaziantep on the Euphrates River. It was an important strategic place from the Hellenistic and Roman period which included one of the few bridges over the Euphrates.
This short documentary film “Zeugma, A Roman Town in Anatolia” takes you to the history of Zeugma: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8323657299167199011#

Reviewers are really getting mixed up and confusing this museum with other museums. Zeugma is the amazing museum with all the mosaics.
This wonderful museum is the Gaziantep Archaeological Museum and has a 20 tl entrance fee. It is located on Kamil Ocak Caddessi.
It is filled with ancient artefacts. Pre bronze age, the Hittite civilisation, Roman civilisation and quite a few civilisations I'd never heard of! Gaziantep certainly has a fascinating history- with so many different cultures that have lived here.
The museum has everything from coins, jewellery, pottery, weapons, statues etc. to a full size replication of a Hittite house.
Everything is well signed in English - there is on street parking outside. Everything is very well displayed. Make sure you do not miss this museum when in Gaziantep or anywhere close by.

So not all the reviews here seem to be for the same museum. That said I thought I'd leave a note for fellow travellers that we found the Archaeology Museum (not the fabulous new mosaic museum note) very closed, but with much active work. The buildings were gutted, no windows, no plumbing... Ask around before making the trek.

This museum used to be the biggest museum in Gaziantep before the Zeugma museum. The mosaics are carried to Zeugma museum leaving this mostly deserted. I advice to visit this place before going to Zeugma Museum.

There is no shortage of places to see ancient roman mosaics, but Turkey boasts some wonderful collections. The Archeological Museum of Antakya (which we also visited) hosts a major collection of this art form from the area around ancient Antioch.
But our Turkish guide, Deniz, claimed the Zeugma mosaics were better and I agree. The scale and quality of the panels is breathtaking. Many are virtually intact and provide a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the craftspersons work. Zeugma became an important settlement on the trade routes to Mesopotamia. The coloured stones collected from the banks of the Euphrates River were used to decorate the homes of the well to do with illustrations of myths and decorative images.
The "poster girl" for the museum is Maenad or the Gypsy Girl. Mona Lisa like, her eyes draw the viewer and follow you around the room. But the larger pieces impressed me with their detail and beauty. The mosaic of Eros and Psyche show the pair reclined on a couch with Psyche's body draped in a translucent fabric. The illusion is even more striking considering the medium used.
Other panels in the collections include geometric desisgns that clearly could inspire modern cubists. Many of the panels have been installed in settings that evoke the original setting of the mosaics in homes and other buildings.
The museum is modern and well designed for its very specific purpose. The interpretive material is informative and of a high standard except for some fractured english which plaques tourist material in this part of the world. This is easily forgiven as the overall quality is very good.
Far from the madding crowds of Istanbul, this is definitely a must see if you make it to the eastern part of Turkey. There are many delights to be found in the quieter parts of this exotic but charming country.

Definetely a must-See place! I am Proud of THE museum as a Turk. I have been there several times, with my children, friends, students. Everyone liked it very much. If you love mythology, it is better to spare some time for THE explanations. I suggest you to watch THE video before going around

Most of the museum was closed due to renovation. They told that items stored in the warehouse for decades will be exhibited sometime during this year. If you are passing by, you might be still interested in seeing current sections. They have a quite impressive collection of ancient seals and a few artifacts from late Hittites and an Egyptian Sphinx. Note all the mosaics are moved to the new museum.

It was a pitty to see that the museum was almost empty. Afterwards we learned that it was going to be renovated so they removed many pieces. Some of them were still presented like the fibulas, jewelry, seals etc. I would recomend you to ask first whether the renovation is finished or not. An archaelogist whom I met at the giftshop of Zeugma Museum told me that there were beautfil and important pieces waiting to presented after the renovation.
