This was quite a different experience. First of all, don't do like us and decide to walk there, Google maps got a bit confused and we walked, and walked, took a while to get there. But once you get there it's worth it.
You first pay the regular ticket, which is very cheap. Then, definitely sign up for the bus tour. That one costs a bit more (a few hundreds of hryvnia) but it's totally worth it. You go with a little bus that definitely saw better times to a runway where you can explore several fighters. This is the first museum where I could enter the planes, sit on the pilot's seat and play around. There are 5 planes to explore. Beyond them, you can also check out tanks, jeeps and other military gear. Also check out the little museum on the premises, it's pretty good.

On May 14, 2017 visited the Poltava Museum of Long-Range and Strategic Aviation. This is a very nice museum which receives no money from the government and is dependent on donations and volunteers. Many of the volunteers are military veterans (read that pilots) who served in such places as Afghanistan. There is also considerable information about the Soviet space program. Our guide pointed to a picture and said all those men have been in space except that one (him). There are displays of all kinds of aviation material and Soviet military operations including Afghanistan, also some uniforms with medals. Some of these uniforms were worn by Heroes of the Soviet Union. There are several displays having to do with Operation Frantic, a program during WW II in which US Army Air Force B-17 bombers flew from England and Italy, bombed their targets, landed at Poltava air base, then flew bombing missions in reverse. Interesting stuff not much known about back here in North America. This museum also has an outdoor display of Soviet era aircraft, mostly bombers, which can be entered for a fee as someone has to bring a ladder to each aircraft. It was a chilly day with a fair wind so I only entered one aircraft, the Tupolev Tu-95MS 'Bear' bomber. To my knowledge this is the only "Bear' on public display in the world. This four engine propeller driven aircraft with counter rotating propellers (eight) on each engine was first built in 1954 to carry nuclear bombs to 'the enemy' and the Russian Federation still has a squadron of them flying (like our old and reliable B-52s). Other planes include the Tu-160 'Blackjack', Tu-22M3 'Backfire', Tu-22K 'Blinder', and Tu-16 'Badger'. I do not know how many of the dozen or so aircraft here are viewable elsewhere. I know I was thrilled to see them here, this is a rare sight, and to be able to get in them, at the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio they will throw you out if you touch a plane. It is necessary to call ahead to make appointment, this is after all on an active military base. As a USA resident I was required to give them a copy of my US passport. The guides were very friendly and informative. I must be 'the most interesting man in the world' as I was invited to touch some of the artifacts, WW II vintage weapons. Actually I think the novelty of an American ex Army guy with an interest in history who hunts and shoots all kinds of stuff caused the guides to give me something of a 'back stage tour', and I appreciated it greatly. Do not expect English to be spoken here. I had a translator with me so I had no problems, just a great experience. If I can get back here on a warmer day, I'd like to get into more of those aircraft.

This museum is located in an aribase. The entrance is 2 km away from one of the railway staions( there are 3 in poltava, be careful).
There is a small museum(50UAH), and if you want to see the outdoor exhibition(the planes), you need to pay another 50 UAH. They will check your passport and sent you into the airbase by a blue minivan. 150 for photo permission and 150 for getting on board.

Very interesting, I enjoyed walking among the military vehicles and weaponry plus the aircraft, though the little old shuttle bus that runs between the two separate exhibits was extremely uncomfortable! A really cool couple of hours.

The unique museum! Must see place in Poltava! It's possible not only to see the unique aircrafts, but also to get inside and make photos! Also you should visit the building of museum with interesting exposition which tells us about USA/USSR operation "Frantic" during WWII.

Remarkable selection of aircraft, mostly strategic bombers, but also some fighter-bombers. You can also go into the cockpits. Highlight for its rarity is probably the Tu-160, the white swan. All for just a few euros. Not much English is spoken (one guide was fluent) but everyone was super-friendly. Every cold-war enthusiast should visit. Three hours by train from Kiev.

Went as part of my private day tour of Poltava. Glad I went, as I saw some pretty interesting pieces, which are on an active air base. More than just planes, they have a good collection of cannons and support vehicles too.

I was there by luck because in that period by time the place was closed for public visit. You can feel the spirit of aviation here. Different models of planes with their history, opportunity to go inside. The area is nice to make picturesque photos

Visited there only once, Aug 2016, It was definitely one of the great exhibitions of aviation for Soviet Ukraine. M-21, M-19 and older versions of the airplanes can be found on model, you can visit the factory room where the airplanes are made, you can also go up to one plane at 100 hryvnas cost, similar one of the best places to visit if you're a pilot fan!

Hello, I'm planning to visit this museum this August. I'd like to go to Poltava on a day trip from Kyev, but I may also spend a night in Poltava before going back to the capital city.
Do you know an efficient way to move on such a day trip?
Was this also your plan?
What is a cost and time efficient way to move between these two cities, not necessarily on a day trip?
Reaching the museum from downtown can be done by taxi or are there other connections?
All similar information very welcome!
Thanks!

Hello!
1)Getting the Poltava from Kyiv is better by train. Visit booking.uz.gov.ua/en/ and buy online the ticket for 240UAH on Interсity+ it's just 3 hours in a way.
2)Better to stay 1 night. The mid price from 100 til 500UAH
3)Taxi is the best way to get Aviation and Poltava battles museums, one=way price shouldn't be more then 50-70UAH, better to download app for taxi on GooglePlay.
P.S. If any additional questions don't hesitate to ask.
