The name “Crafts Courtyard Museum” does not capture the exhibition. A more accurate name would be “Soviet Era Nostalgia Collection”, for this is really what you will experience when you walk through the exhibition. The collection offers an eye-opening display of thousands of items used by soviet citizens from the 1920s to the late 1980s. The privately run museum is located in an industrial area, in a remote corner of Zhytomyr, at some distance from the city center, but reachable by taxi. The last piece of road, leading to the gate is not paved. You have arrived when you see a gate with the name of the Museum above and a small wooden ticket house. If the museum is closed, you can call the owner and Chief Custodian (non-English speaking) who will arrive in 10 minutes to open. The ticket price is still low despite it was raised recently because some foreign visitors mistook the low price for a low-quality experience. This is not the case. If you have a Ukrainian/English speaker in your group, you can opt for a guided tour by the Chief Custodian with him/her as an interpreter. The tour through the courtyard and two floors of exhibitions takes 1-1½ hours and is recommended if you want a more detailed explanation of the items available for Soviet citizens and a better understanding of life in the Soviet Union. The experience is not great, but it is good and much higher than we expected. We voluntarily paid 100 UAH per person for the entrance and guided tour.
