We found this the best spot to take some nice pictures. The gate was the main entrance to the Ciudadela back in the days. There is a nice and well conserved canon by the gate and a walking place alongside the old wall up to the riverside.

Great spot for a photo; otherwise it is just a gateway into this quaint little town. Get ready to stroll and slow down for awhile.

This is a really nice old town in with a nice port area, it is easily accessible from Montevideo. Lots of cool old cars, nicely decorated and lots of overpriced restaurants. Plenty of day trippers clog up the streets but these can be easily ignored.

The gate with the chain, wooden bridge is what is left from the once fantastic city wall perimeter. It is photogenic but seriously, it is nothing much.

A beautiful area. The Rio de la Plata laps at the shore everywhere. You mistake it for Ocean because it's clean and the beaches are light tan to white! The stone walks of Colonia tell a story of "fighting for control" . The shops and museums are well priced and friendly. We ate at The Tunnel, good food, out of... More

This whole area is just so nice. This entrance is grand and has a lot of history. I'm glad I hired a guide because I otherwise would not have known anything other than it's a gate!

A small bridge connect the other part of the town with this one. Old door where you can see some cannons at the top of the walls.

It is really a nice walking day and cute cafes and shops as a side trip from Buenos Aires. We took the arrives at around 2 and left at about 9 and that was plenty of time.

This gate has a drawbridge from centuries ago.The walls adjacent are about six feet thick with cannons through the holes.

As you're wandering around Colonia, you're sure to stumble upon this massive stone gate and wall. It's interesting, for sure. And a nice walk along it to the water.
