In the present Registan square in the XV century on the behest of Mirzo Ulugbek bin Shahrukh there were built several buildings: khamam, mosques, caravanserai, khanaka and majestic and incomparable building of Palace of Sciences - madrasah. Ulugbek Madrasah is the most pleasing to the eye of the buildings in the world class Registan Square. The façade is stunning done in small coloured tiles in brilliant patterns, whose symbolism was lost to me, but the beauty of it was enough. It is flanked by some very nice and interesting minarets. Inside the courtyard is typical of the... More

The Registan is, quite rightly, the single most important cultural and historical site in all of Uzbekistan. While some might argue that it's the most important in Central Asia, such a ranking would quite frankly be determined by your own perspective of the history of this region. Ulugbek is the most popular madrassa of the three: it has the most... More

Come to see this feast for the eyes while touring Registan. Explore its courtyard and lookout for a ceramics shop selling pointillist-like adorned ceramics. These are gorgeous and highly unique.

Beautiful place. Take your time and enjoy it. Read the stories and symbolism. Read about Ulug Beg and appreciate what he did for his time

Ulugbek Madrasah is a great historical sightseeing in Samarkand. You may find a lot of art works around the Madrasah.

The three grand edifices that make up the Registan in Samarkand are all worth a visit, but Ulug Beg’s school of learning was the best of the bunch. We visited here first after taking in the area from the viewing platform in front of the square and the view of the façade from the center of the square. In ancient... More

This is a gorgeous building, to be sure. But the fascinating bit to me is how the former classrooms have become workshops and stores for handicrafts. It is nice to see the mosque portion, the "teacher's lounge" and the observatory display as well as the outside.

Registan Square is breathtaking in so many ways. Go and visit it while the country is still unspoilt.

This is the jewel in the crown of the Registan Square madrassahs, and a beautiful example of Uzbek madrassah architecture. Most are no longer working places of learning and now contain small shopping stalls, but still worth visiting.
