Golf in Asia is usually well organized, carts are assigned, caddies are introduced, you putt and go to the driving range. Unfortunately that’s not the case here. The set up is prolonged and disorganized likely because they have too many golfers on the course for what they can manage. There’s signs in the cart on pace of play on a hole by hole basis, unfortunately they’re largely ignored. No marshalls and sometimes 3 deep on a tee led to a 5 hour 30 minute round which wasn’t much fun. At the request of the staff we politely let the senior manager in the pro shop know of our experience and her only response was to refuse to accept US currency for payment as it was ‘flawed’. It’s a shame because the golf course and the caddies are both great.

The new management is definitely taking this place from bad to worst. Fairway quality is sub-standard no maintenance whatsoever for consecutive months. potholes divots not fixed, marshals have no idea how to speed up slow players , food served cold while charges increase ridiculously over time. Long-time staff appear to be helpful although they have no say. Da Nang, Hoi An and Lang co, Hue have much better clubs.

The course is not bad, but absolutely not good either. Fairways are not maintained well enough and greens are slow and needs a loving hand.
Caddies are ok, needs to be better at English.
Won’t be back.

I stayed in Hoi An for 3 days and emailed the club in advance to see if I could book a tee time and hire clubs and shoes. I received no response so contacted the again direct via website. Again no response. I was disappointed to say the least. I won't ever bother with a Montgomery club abroad again. Managed to sort a game out at another local club, which was very good.

We recently arranged to play this course through Golfasia, using this agent to facilitate the coordination of accommodation, transfers and flight times. Owing to rainy weather forecast and having played DaNang Golf Course the day before in rain, we cancelled our booking at Montgomery Links.
To our amazement the Montgomery Links refused to refund any portion of the green fees prepaid. A contradiction of consumer laws in many developed countries I would suggest. Questioning our agent Golfasia we 'mystery shopped' Montgomery Links who confirmed that green fees must be paid at time of booking and are not refundable owing to weather etc.
The customer service person there agreed the only way to obviate this risk is to take a chance and wait until the morning you wish to play then book, particularly in the wet season.
Golfasia refunded USD $42, their own in initiative we appreciated.
So fellow travellers take heed.

The course itself is most enjoyable even if the greens played quite slow. Fairways are in excellent condition. Caddies are not optional and their cost is added onto the total fee. Ours were barely OK compared to the exceptional ones at Da Nang GC.
Things got a bit sour at the end of the game. When we thanked our caddies and gave them a tip, we were greeted by long faces. Without any tact, the caddie master stepped in and said that they should be tipped an additional US$15 each on top of their hire fee. Given the original green fee, caddie fee and barely adequate level of service, I found this to be outrageous. Had they been cheerful and good, I would have considered it but not with the dour service we received.
We questioned this tip issue with reception and they informed us that $10 is usual. My issue is not the amount but the poor service and the EXPECTATION of a large gratuity.
Visitors beware.

Dear Andrew
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your comments and you can be assured we take them very seriously. Although tipping is widley accepted in the Asian region, Montgomerie Links in no way considers it compulsory and we strongly believe it to be a personal choice of our member and guest based on their overall satisfaction of service received. We can also assure you that your comments will be used in further training of our staff moving forward. Thank you for making Montgomerie Links a part of your holiday and we hope to see you again in the near future.

The Montgomery Golf Course is beautiful and in good shape, very nice layout and challenging but the service has ruined my experience.
On Saturday August 24th, we spent a substantial amount of money to stay at its resort hotel and to play a round of golf. It began at 5:55 am when we walked to the clubhouse for breakfast. It took us a few minutes to order a coffee and a fried egg with bread. Suddenly a lady marshall or starter walked up to our table and asked if we had a 6:23 tee time. We replied yes and she asked us to go to the tee box because our tee time was up — it wasn’t yet we have 20 minutes to go. I said. She ordered us to go to the first tee because it was open for play. We begged her if we could at least wait for our coffee order, and then we would be there in 10 minutes before our tee time. She raised her voice and told us we had to go now. I asked her what they would do with our food and she said it would be packed and delivery to us on the course.
Our foursome walked down to get our golf clubs but there were only 3 bags in the two golf carts. I asked where my golf clubs were. They scrambled on their radios to find my golf clubs and the lady who had previously rushed us to the tee box came and rushed us to the tee box again, saying my golf clubs would be there. but they were not.
The other three players in my group played their first shots, then another Marshall at the first tee told me to just go and the bag would be delivered to me, but I hadn’t gotten the chance to tee up. I walked to my cart to go forward and then a Marshall told me wait my golf bag finally arrived.....!
I tee up and began playing my round of golf and look back after every shots for my food but only to see the next group, a twosome, didn’t arrive to the tee box until we walk off the first green. We continued playing and I waited, keep looking back for my food and coffee, but it never came.
I am mad, hungry and thirsty.
After our first nine, there was a 30+ minutes wait at the tenth tee so I walked to the clubhouse to ask for my food. The waitress told me she sent my food to the Marshall. I asked the Marshall at the tenth tee and she told me she gave it to the second group of our party. Later I found out they forced our second foursome to start at the tenth tee, and never bothered to bring my food or coffee or water to me. I ended up spending 246,000VND for food.
When we reached the 17th tee, we all tee up, and then suddenly two boys ran up to the middle of the fairway, picked up our golf balls, and then disappeared back down to the lake... What is going on here???
I want the golf course management to look into retraining their employees and to reimburse the amount of money I spent at your golf course.
Thank you.

So we came here for an early start with some fruit and a couple of croissants from our hotel, because it was earlier than breakfast started, to be told we had to pay $5 each for bringing food and drink on to the course.
Admittedly we had brought water too, but we found that there was none provided for free (probably cost about 10c in Vietnam) so to get that charge was shocking. In fact I must have played about 4000 rounds of golf in my life and never have I been charged to bring a bit of fruit and water with me.
The course is excellent. The caddies are great and the food in the club house decent so bizarre money making rules made by an utterly uncommercial management who know nothing about golf makes this sort of venture totally unsustainable long term when any form of competition arises.
Golf very good but bring water and hide it.
Morons!!!

I wanted to try Montgomerie Links so I called and booked a weekday afternoon round. This course is 1 km down the road from BRG Danang.
Was grouped with 2 friendly expats and our 3-ball completed the course in about 4.5 hours. The course is nice and I found it to be quite similar to BRG,ie both well presented courses and in very good condition but somehow for me not as memorable as Els Teluk Datai in Langkawi or Wairakei in NZ.
The mandatory lady caddies were pleasant, polite and didn't rush us around the course as we were just pacing with the 4-ball in front of us. The locker/shower facilities are great and I also splurged on a Montgomerie Links Footjoy shirt for VND1.6M from the pro-shop.
Playing at Monty proved to be pricier than BRG as Monty green fees of VND3.0M does not even include 1/2 cart. Carts are not mandatory but it was an additional cost of VND900k for me as it wasn't a shared cart (which would otherwise be VND450k x 2).
I arrived a bit early so I had time to try their practice chipping and putting greens as well as the driving range where balls also incurred a small fee. Caddy tips also additional.
Bottled water and isotonic drinks are available for VND30k - 50k which is roughly 3 to 4 times higher than if bought from outside.
The cost of golfing in Vietnam do add up so be prepared. Booking through golf brokers may get you better deals.
Finally we enjoyed our early dinner afterwards at Birdies restaurant. Food is yummy and priced more reasonably. Course closes at 7pm.

I would like to warn you on the following acts. In geneneral, I put my handbag between my husband and me on the golf car. However, this time, the caddy insisted that I put it behind. In the middle of the game, I found out that my bag was between us, I thus opened it to take a water bottle. My wallet was opened and I lost money. I also saw the caddy opening the golf bag of another player and seek for balls to steal. I reported to the duty manager but no actions were taken, nor answers given. Be carreful to your bag !!!

Written 5 June 2018

Do you have to hire a caddie?
Do you have to go in golf carts can't I get a push trolley?
Is it good hire clubs?
Is it worth coming through from hoi an?
Should I go here or is banahills worth the drive from hoi an?

Caddies and buggies are mandatory. I took my own clubs so not sure about hire club quality. If choosing between Montgomerie or Ba Na Hills personally I would pick Ba Na Hills every time.

Please advise price of 18 holes games at Montgomerie Links on the morning of Wednesday 9 December 2015 for 4 pax, all senior (above 55 years of age) players.
Written 3 December 2015
It depends if you have your own clubs or not. If not, about $250 aus per person. If you have, about $160-$170 aus per person.
That includes buggy (for two players) and a caddie each.
