Review of: Ayla Golf Club
Rather like old-fashioned train spotters, my son and I walked from our hotel to the Ayla Golf Course out of curiosity just to have a look around, without any real intention of playing. We were greeted by the very friendly assistant professional. His salesmanship and the attractiveness of the course persuaded us to play a round. Within an hour we had returned to our hotel, changed and were back at the club house ready to tee off. The mid-week, slightly off season rate (this was the end of February), meant that the green was 60 JOD per person. For that we got 18 holes, the use of a buggy, unlimited bottled water, some tees, a pitch repairer and a ball marker. We also had to hire clubs and buy a sleeve of balls each. They were happy for us to play in trainers, although my son also hired some golf shoes. The clubs were a full set of Cobras with an Odyssey putter, all in excellent condition. The rental price was not excessive and our total bill for the whole experience was about 100 JOD each. I don't think the dress code is that strict, but you will need to wear a polo shirt. Ayla is quite a long course – well over 7000 yards. When we played, there was quite a lot of run on the fairways, although somewhat counter-intuitively, in the summer the grass on them grows so thickly that they play longer. The tees were in excellent condition – they cover a lot of ground, and the greens were equally well looked after and pretty true. It is often quite windy, according to our friendly assistant pro, and hence the fairways are quite wide. That maybe, but they are also littered with a wide array of deep fairway and even deeper greenside bunkers, all waiting to entrap the errant drive or iron shot. Either side of the fairways there is hardened sand, interspersed with miscellaneous bushes and grasses. There are also a number of water-hazards including lakes, streams and ditches. Even though our golf didn’t always match the quality of the course, we had a thoroughly enjoyable round. The course was in excellent condition (they were hosting a tour event the next week), the scenery over to the Jordanian mountains was spectacular and best of all, we had the whole place to ourselves. The first time we saw anyone was on the 18th green! Also check out the very up- market buggies. They are fitted with GPS so not do they provide shot yardages, but interestingly if you try to drive too close to the greens or water hazards they go into limp mode until you return legitimate territory. I would thoroughly recommend playing a round at Alya. The assistant pro and other staff could not have been more helpful and the course, which was in excellent condition, provided an enjoyably testing challenge. Given that golf in other holiday destinations such as Portugal, Spain and France appears to have become more and more expensive, all in all, this seemed pretty good value for money. In addition how many members of your local golf club can say that they have played 18 holes in Jordan? If you have a spare half day in Aqaba, rather than sit on the beach, treat yourself to a round. If you don't fancy a full round, there is a short nine holer, which is flood lit for night play as well as a well-kitted out driving range.

1. There's no transportation inside the compound so everytime you want to leave you have to tell the guard to call a taxi which will take 10 jds for a short trip. 2. Mediocre / overpriced Cocktails and food. Also you are not allowed to bring your own. 3. No decent toilets and facilities. 4. The beach is small and can get crowded. Never visiting Aqaba again. Cyprus is much better and cheaper.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, we welcome any opportunity to improve our service and the experience that we provide our guests. We're sorry to hear that you were not happy with some of the elements of your visit and we would like to take this opportunity to respond to your feedback in detail: 1. Transportation inside the compound – We recommend using the shuttle bus at the hotel that drops off guests to and from B12 Beach Club and the Ayla Golf Club. There is also a shuttle bus from the Airport to Ayla with every landing flight. 2. Cocktails and food – Our B12 Beach Club menu was designed to appeal to all our guests and uses the freshest ingredients possible. As with any restaurant, we try to keep our prices competitive while making sure that we can maintain the highest levels of quality. 3. Toilets and facilities – We currently have four toilets and four changing rooms for each gender. We also have a member of staff who is on duty all the time to ensure the facilities are kept clean and comfortable. 4. The beach – The B12 Beach Club is a very popular destination, especially when the weather is good (as it so often is in Aqaba). We’re sorry that it seemed too crowded on your visit. You can also enjoy the La Plage beach at the Hyatt Hotel next time you visit. Thank you again for your comments. If you would like to get in touch to discuss this more, please drop us an email at info@ayla.com.jo
