Great day trip from outside Takayama station to Shirakowa, includes lunch and excellent English speaking tour guide.Very comfortable coach. Easy and better value than arranging trip yourself.

Nohi Bus provides most of the bus tours and bus access to sights in this region. I do not know their safety record, as I couldn't find any other reviews. Unfortunately, our experience turned into a terrifying incident.

We were coming back from seeing the thatched roof houses in Shirakawa-go. Driver seemed to be nursing the bus, pushing the gas on and off. Three alarms went off at one point. Air conditioning shut down, smelled antifreeze, a/c came back on.

Then a loud bang and cabin filled with steam and smelled like antifreeze. People screaming. People in front of me almost jumped from moving bus. Bus finally stopped.

My husband and I had to climb over seats and jumped out a bus window. We were covered in a film of antifreeze. Bus had several inches of antifreeze on floor.

At least 20 people were SEVERELY burned. The bus did not have any first aid supplies. After 20 minutes, emergency services finally arrived and eventually transported people to hospital.

Those of us not injured where still covered in antifreeze. I could still smell and taste it. Using Google translate, I tried to get water from the bus company to rinse our mouths and faces, to remove this toxic chemical. They said they could not do that.

After an hour and a half, they finally got a new bus for those of us not hurt. Nohi Bus company refused to refund our trip! Nor accommodate us for our ruined clothing and a cell phone damaged in the incident.

I would not recommend this company. Poor bus maintenance. Poorly trained driver. Poor response to emergency. Poor customer service after a serious incident. Such a scary incident!

I joined the Nohi Bus Company trip from Takayama to Magome/Tsumago on opening day. Departure was at 8:10 am and we arrived at Magome around 11 am. As soon as we arrived, I was struck by how well-preserved this old town is. Not only was the scenery fantastic, the town seemed exactly how it was left long ago; the streets were lined with houses and shops that had never been touched or rebuilt. As a part of the opening campaign, we were gifted with a stick of gohei-mochi, sticky rice balls with walnut miso glaze, which were so delicious we had to go back and buy another one at the end! It was cold on this day and the warmth and flavor of these treats really hit the spot. The Nakasendo Road is the road that connects what was then called Edo (now Tokyo) and Kyoto, that was travelled by feudal lords in ancient times to reach their families and fulfill their duties to periodically navigate between the two cities. This road is 8.3 kms long, and travels through both flatlands and mountains, so be prepared to WALK! At the beginning of the road there were several places to buy souvenirs and grab a little snack, and after walking up the cobblestone road, there was a viewpoint where we were able to take in the entire landscape of Mt. Ena. It was an amazing 360 degree panoramic view, and the cloudy skies that day only added to the mystique of the scenery. The road soon led to a trek through the mountains, where some parts were flat and easier to walk and others were quite steep and treacherous. It is important to wear comfortable, preferably waterproof shoes that are suitable for hiking, and also dress warm, as it does get quite cold in the middle of the mountain. Through the trek, we encountered several stone statues and shrines that we could only imagine were built long ago. Towards the end of the trail, we took in the majestic view of the Odaki and Medaki waterfalls, which made the long walk worth the hard work. At the Tateba Tea House, there were many tourists who were stopping for a short break. We had worked up quite an appetite by the time we reached our destination, Tsumago. We looked for somewhere to eat and chose a soba noodle restaurant, where we had the Maitake Mushroom Tempura Soba, which was delicious and filling. After our meal, we were still in the mood for a snack, so we bought a few oyaki buns, both sweet (white walnut bean paste) and savory (eggplant and nozawana green leaf), which were amazing! Our time at Tsumago came to a conclusion around 3 pm, and we boarded the bus and made our way back to Takayama, arriving around 6 pm. The trip was all-around fantastic, and it was amazing to see the well-preserved old town and think about all of the people that travelled the same road long ago. The scenery and food were also great, and we were very satisfied with our trip. The only caution we would warn others to look out for is that this trail is not suitable for those with weak legs or the elderly, as the trek is quite hardcore and sometimes slippery, and can be dangerous for those who are not confident in their physical strength or endurance. Also, we would recommend borrowing a walking stick at the beginning, that can be returned once you reach Tsumago. However, the visit was a success, and we would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for somewhere unique to visit!

From Kyoto to Takayama, I took direct train. Then I realized how much more easier it is if I had taken Nohi bus. On the way back from Takayama to Kyoto, I took Nohi bus. As I compare these 2 direct options, Nohi bus journey is longer by only 10 mins but the price is cheaper almost by half. Its even less of a hassle as the train station is more complicated than the bus station. The ride is smooth and comfortable, not winding at all.

We booked for the Shirakawa-go and Gokayama(Ainokura) Sightseeing Bus through JapanBusOnline but the local tour operator was Nohi Bus. We got Chinami Yamashita as our guide and we could not get more lucky! She was very systematic in organizing the day as well as the tour. Chinami was very sincere and friendly in dealing with each one of us with our queries and concerns. During the bus ride to Ainokura, she carefully explained the day's itinerary and even provided visual aids in introducing the places we will be visiting as well as the history and culture behind each place or UNESCO site. The visual aids as well as actual musical instruments and house models made us appreciate the places even more. She gave us ample time to visit each site/place including visiting the observatories in each area. Lunch was at Shirakawa and it was a sumptuous Japanese lunch to keep you warm on a cold winter's day. After lunch, Chinami took us to a special area in the Shirakawa observatory exclusive to Nohi bus guests where we were able to take photos away from the horde of tourists. She gave us some options after the observatory on how to explore Shirakawa-go. She also took us to a place where we have the option to try the red bean soup and Sake ice cream. After the tour at the Nohi bus station in Takayama, she assisted each and everyone in getting back to their trip back home or places to visit around Takayama. Definitely a bang for the buck!

Booked our tickets really early (first day of ticket release) and we managed to seat right in the front ! Bus always on time and they're almost always fully booked. You can get your tickets on the day but make sure you don't miss the last bus to your destination.

We caught the Nouhi bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go then to Takayama. Cruisy ride and great service. They have space down below for your suitcases. We went on busy winter holiday season. Make sure you print your tickets to show them to the driver.

Bought return tickets from Takayama station to Hirayu Onsen. Told the lady we purchased the tickets off that we were doing a day trip to the onsens. Turns out every single onsen is closed in the town, and subsequently so are all the cafes, making it a ghost town. Very annoyed that we spent over 6000 yen and a whole afternoon for nothing. When we returned to Takayama the people at customer service admitted they knew the main three onsens weren’t open (the others are all tiny baths within guest houses that were also closed) and refused to refund our tickets. Totally unacceptable from a company that specialises on trips to tourist locations. Extremely disappointed.

This tour took all the work out of getting from a-b-c and we saw all the main sights we wanted. The area is immensely beautiful. I wished we could have had a longer stop in Anoikura. Tour guide was helpful.

The ryokan we stayed at recommended the Nohi Bust tour to Shirakawago and Suganuma, both UNESCO World Heritage sights. The ryokan made reservations for us. Obtaining tickets at this time of year was simple as we showed up at the Takayama Bus Station about 25 minutes before the tour departure at 1030am and the bus company had our name.

The bus station made an announcement at 1025am that the tour bus was ready to board. We were met by the bus driver and the 2 tour guides, an English speaking and Japanese speaking. The bus left on tine.

Our English speaking tour guide was Chinami Y. Words cannot explain how thorough and great of a job Chinami did as our tour guide. Chinami began the tour with a summary of what the group was about to embark on, what we were going to see, what type of lunch we would have, what sights were coming up as we traveled on the bus to the first location and demonstrated the instruments the locals played at Suganuma.

When we arrived at each location Chinami walked with us pointing out important facts of the village, explained the different tools used in the Kanda gunpowder house in Shirakawago and offered and took many photos for us.

The bus driver was good as the ride to and from was smooth.

In summary, if you are looking to tour Shirakawago and Gokayama, the Nohi Bus tour is well worth it at 6900 yen/person, which includes lunch. If you get Chinami as a guide, you will be taken care of.

I tried to book one day trip from Takayama to Kamikochi and Shirakawago, but the website in English is really confuse, which can book only day tour. So, I decided not to book in advance. When we arrived Nohi bus terminal, there are so many interesting routes and operate many times a day. Some route allow open seat, which is more convenient. Staffs can communicate english well. There are coin lockers next to the bus terminal.
