Tripadvisorâs approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is no doubt going to be one of my most memorable excursions, every time I have visited Japan itâs always been during summer so this time I got a chance to spend a couple of weeks during winter, we get snow where I live but this is the next level and Shinhotaka Ropeway was absolutely stunning, I was in total awe of the beauty and spectacular scenery, if you ever get a chance I thoroughly recommend this excursion, if breathtaking beautiful scenery is your thing the this is for you, word of warning though if you do go during winter I strongly recommend plenty of warm clothes as the day we were there it was -13 degrees and if you can, invest in a pair of ice spikes that attach to the soles of your shoes and just gives you more balance and confidence walking on icy surfaces- not expensive.

Winter Wonderland in December ! The purpose of our visit was to see snow and we were not disappointed! Enroute from Nagoya via Takayama to the ropeway station, it started snowing and the snow capped trees and scenery out of the bus windows was breathtaking! Getting there from Nagoya is 3hr+1.5hr bus rides from Nagoya-Takayama-Shinhotaka Ropeway. At the ropeway station, there are two separate cable car stations, the cable cars either run past 15min/45min (tier 1) or 00mins/30min (tier2) timed to enable smooth connections between both lines. You need to plan ahead (catch the cable cars back down to base station) if you intend to catch the last Nohi route bus back to Takayama bus station (1755hrs in Dec22). There was a cafe bakery at mid level station and a restaurant and gift shop at the summit station. Quite overpriced food because itâs the only F&B outlet. At the summit you can look down at all the neighboring mountains from the observation deck and walk around the nature park. Absolutely stunning views and peaceful environment to enjoy the freshly falling snow!

Very nice ride up the mountain as you are feasted with beautiful arial view of the surrounding. The cable car brings you up to a very high altitude where clouds and mountain tops are seen at eye level. Rather cold up on the viewing deck on TOP. Good to bring a warm
Jacket so as to enjoy yourself up there. The view at the deck is lovely. You see snow crowned mountain tops and feel like itâs winter in June.

The ropeway began to operate early in the morning. We were lucky enough and managed to pay a visit to this ropeway after checking out from the Hirayu Onsen in the morning, before leaving for Toyama. The ride was a short one but it quickly brought us all the way up to the hilltop for us to enjoy the most comprehensive view of the Hida mountains. The double decker cable car was spacious too!

It was an interesting experience. You have to take an initial cable car to a staging area where based on crowd you have waiting time to board a double decker cable car. The view at the top is amazing and it was crisp and nice on a sunny day. Clear view of the mountains with occasional cloud passing making you close to it

Iâm a little bit sad because Japan had a very little snow. Thank God this place have a lot of snow. Itâs all white! The staff told me that they usually have 2 times more of snow. Thereâs an area where the snow piled up and built a snow walls. It reminds me of Alpine Route in Toyama. But itâs open during winter! If you come here make sure to wear anti-slip shoes or snow boots with you!

You can take the local bus from Takayama or Hirayu Onsen to reach the Shinhokata ropeway station. There are few bus companies selling day tour tickets like 2 day pass inclusive of the ropeway ticket.

Hi, wanting to catch the bus from Takayama to Shin-Hotaka Ropeway but concerned the travel may cause motion sickness for my son. Can anyone please tell me if it has heaps of bends etc . Thanks đ

I've driven there and the road does have quite a few bends. Nothing too sharp. But based on my experience with buses in Japan, they are driven rather slow, and the ride is quite comfortable - motion sickness should be the least of your concern. Else you can buy motion sickness medicine called "Travelmin" (available for juniors as well) which is available at some convenience store / drug stores.
Hi! Does anyone know or can refer a private tour guide and/or car that we can hire for a day trip in Shinhotaka? We are hoping to find a guide who can accommodate and customize our itinerary for the day. Thanks!

How much time is needed to visit ShinHotaka Ropeway and Takayama? Does Takayama need one full day or lesser is fine to explore the place? I will be there in mid-Dec but contemplating if I should visit ShinHotaka as that would mean shorten my time in Takayama. I understand the scenery is very beautiful but does December have a high chance of cloudiness? Thank you!

Takayama at least 2 days for Morning market, Takayama old town district and its Temple and shrines as well as Onsens. For Shinhotaka Ropeway you need half a day, unless you wish to go for onsens, otherwise footpath will do. As for cloudiness, Iâm not sure as Weâre there in October. The autumn leaves are beautiful during November. Donât missed it. Thank you Lim
Hello I will be visiting Shinhotaka Ropeway on 24 November this year any more snow to see ? Thank
Hi, I will be visiting Shinhotaka Ropeway end of November this year, any more autumn foliage to see? If not, is it still worth going? Thanks
Is it at its peak already? If yes, that mean there wont be any autumn foliage around end of November? Thank you for your answer.

hai...how long you spending time at shin hotaka ropeway area?
Hafild_W

It would vary though. I was there at early January, so I can only stay outside the station up to 45 minutes. After that, I sat at the restaurant, ate lunch and starred at the outside scenery for about 1.5-2 hours. If you come on other season, maybe you can take a longer walk and hike around the station. I recommend at least 3 hours there, and you have to PLAN YOUR TRANSPORT WELL, right from where you are staying, back to that place.

Is the Ropeway open in the evening the entire October? We like to see the stars so need to make sure the transit from Hirayu operates at night too. How do i find the information? Thank you.
