We went there twice. First around 7am+ and the second time later around 8am+. More shops were opened and we saw and ate more as we walked along the 300m stretch of pop up stalls and shops.

We were visiting Takayama Old Town as part of our day trip and stopped by here enroute there. It was almost 10.30am when we arrived and the morning/farmers markets were almost going to close (usually around 11am-12pm) but we managed to shop there. We saw some stall holders doing their packing while some were still running their businesses. (but you could also buy from the shophouses too instead of the makeshift stalls) It's a good place to visit as the makeshift market stalls were located next to the river canal and they were mainly selling their own produces like rice, fruits, veggies, pickles with some local arts and crafts. Prices here were relatively cheap and reasonable and the stallholders were very friendly though they speak no English. You could try the samples before buying and the stallowners were generous in serving too. We managed to buy quite a good number of local produces. They were nice and cheap! Great to visit here and do allocate sufficient time (i.e. coming earlier) so that you can shop fully, stretching about 200-300m!

Lovely market where I bought lots of reasonably priced gifts. Pleasant surroundings, it's a nice walk along the river where you can see carp and herons. Also some interesting sculptures around. There are lot of nice shops beside the market too.

We stay in Takayama for 3 nights and visited this morning market twice. It opens at 7am so we visited the market after we did the Higashiyama walking course. Interesting stalls selling coffee with edible (cookie) cup, Sarubobo (mascot of hida region), takoyakis and waffles etc. Love that we can sit down by the river to enjoy our food.

The nostalgic historic old towns always bring out the charms, uniqueness and distinctiveness of the culture of the people of that country or place at a certain stage in that country history. I always love that immersive cultural walk to discover the historical past. Walking along Jonker Street and the Portugese Village conjure images of the colonial past when Malacca was the Venice of the East. Wandering around Hoi An Old Town bring me back to the historic past when Hoi An was the prominent trading port for the European, Japanese and Chinese merchants. The intrinsic Japanese Bridge and Japanese settlement left an indelible historic footprint in this Vietnamese old town. The Lijiang Old Town in Yunnan set the historic silk and tea route in the south and the centre of cultural exchange between the Han, Naxi, Tibetan and the miao minorities. It can be Huanglongxi, it can be the Vigan city or the Fenghuang ancient town.. the list continued. And right here in Takayama old town, the houses of the Edo period are beautifully preserved when the city thrived as a wealthy merchant town during the feudal ages. Here you cannot find the neon lit entertainment hub of Shibuya. I like this morning market beside the River Miyagawa where the locals showcase their stuff. While most museums, temples in the old houses are quiet, the morning market is so vibrant and rowdy with crowd. I walked from one end of the market to the other end and like to look and appreciate the items each stall was selling. Most stalls sold local crafts and farm products such as vegetables, pickles and flowers. Atmospheric and add much dynamism to this quaint old town.
