- Andy FDevizes, United Kingdom1,277 contributionsOK but Not ExcitingThis is the old government buidings. TBH there's not a huge amount to see, as there's several empty rooms, bedecked with tatami mats. It's only the info boards that bring to life went on here. The second half of the one-way (shoes-off) walkaround is more interesting. From empty offices you move on to more interesting areas of the place - stores, kitchens etc. Worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 September 2023
- Martina1888Inverness, United Kingdom506 contributionsTakayama JinyaI felt slightly underwhelmed by this former governmental builing. The walk through the different rooms was ok but there wasn't that much too see and I've seen more intriguing places. I'd recommend to visit only if you have some spare time, there are other more worthwhile places to visit in Takayama.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 October 2023
- chowsoGloucester, United Kingdom1,758 contributionsInteresting glimpse of the pastThis was an interesting building to explore and it wasn't crowded. It was raining and cold, so having to remove shoes for the whole experience, we started to get very cold and rushed at the end to be able to put our shoes back on. There is a lot of history, lovely gardens and some interesting exhibits. It's definitely worth visiting.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2024
- JohnstannoSingapore, Singapore509 contributionsLearnt alot 👍This place is more interesting than we thought and definitely learnt alot from this visit. Understand more on the historical Takayama area, government officials in the past and see beautiful garden. The whole visit at leisure pace should take you about 45mins. Definitely worth the visit but do note the operating hours.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 June 2024
- Nicole W61 contributionsProcesses from the pastIt is an old government building showing how things were done in the past. There is a small entrance fee, you have to take off your shoes to walk through the immense building. You follow a set route with a nice amount of other tourists. There are signs to explain what you see in the beginning when walking through the residence. At the end there are a lot of preserved documents and artifacts, unfortunately all is in local language. Still it is impressive to see how everything worked in those days. The garden needed some work to look beautiful again.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 August 2024

We were surprised how interesting we found this building. We spent around an hour there and found it enjoyable. There were QR codes with explanations of various items. Also loved seeing the torture area and the loos!! The rice building area was closed off for repairs.

One of the few places open during covid. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I thought it'd be a quick walk through but was there over an hour. QR readers was a nice bonus plus most items have at least a little English explanation. I'd recommend visiting.

This building was a place for the Edo-Bakufu Government from 1692 til 1868. It shows you how a building looked in this time. Inside you see many rooms and take a look around. For me it was nothing special but if you are interested in things like that you will like it. The building also looks nice from the outside so it was still worth to visit.

.. but be sure to wear thick socks.
A historic official compound of the Edo period. Beautiful rooms, interesting exhibits of the period. A lovely garden, too.
English explanations somewhat scarce.
All in all, probably the #1 place to visit in Takayama.
You have to take off your shoes to go inside, which means a good hour or two in your socks. The building isn't heated, and it does get relatively cold here :)

In use as an official government building complex from 1692 until 1969, this is the only existing building of its kind in Japan. A National Historic Site, the complex now houses a museum showcasing maps of the Hida region, historical town plans, documents of feudal lords, and the largest traditional rice storehouse in Japan. A visitor gets to see rooms that once served as guest rooms, conference rooms, office rooms, and an "interrogation" room depicting some persuasive methods.
Don't miss this important place of interest where shoguns, feudal lords, government officials dealing with tax collection, policing, forest management, tax collection, and rice (tax payment) storage all contributed to its history.
Go, enjoy.

I like museums such as this which are authentic, interesting and concise. You can finish it within two hours, so it's not too tiresome or overwhelming. And it is interesting and really easy to get the point of what they're trying to show you.
Highly recommended.
