- chowsoGloucester, United Kingdom1,745 contributionsNice area with quality shopsThis is a lovely area with some very nice souvenir shops and sake breweries. I enjoyed looking around some of the souvenir shops as the goods weren’t tacky plastic that you might get elsewhere, there were some genuine crafts on display. It wasn’t too busy when we visited but I can imagine at peak times it would be packed with people. If you’re in Takayama it’s definitely worth a look even if you just take in the lovely traditional buildings.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 April 2024

- RicochanNew York390 contributionsGet Here EarlyOMG! Visiting Takayama felt like stepping into a samurai movie! Make sure to arrive early. We stayed near the main train station and took photos at Sanmachi Suji around 8 AM before heading to the morning markets. By 10 AM, the street gets crowded. The shops offer high-quality, traditional Japanese items, and prices were reasonable with a strong USD. We tried some delicious Takayama beef sushi. I'd love to return.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 August 2024
- synTorontoToronto, Canada1,500 contributionsCrowded crazy walk through Takayama historic neighborhoodThis area is popular with tourists because it looks old and historic with its narrow streets crammed with different businesses, but it can definitely get crowded. Really crowded. I think the area is also known for its street food which is more accurately shops selling food through a window to the street. Lots of stuff on skewers. We had beef, pork, chicken and a sticky rice all on a stick. We had takoyaki. We had ice cream. This is also a big area for souvenirs so we got some of those too. Overall: Good to experience but you need to have some patience. Hopefully you aren’t there when the tour buses are.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 September 2024

This is my third visit to Takayama and I'm still loving the town's historic atmosphere. The streets are lined with old wooden buildings which are transformed into shophouses selling food and various Japan crafts so it feels very fascinating to roam through the charming lanes.
The streets are always filled with tourists and long queues can be seen for the hida beef sushi which is a signature of Takayama. I've tried Gohei-mochi, a miso-glazed ricecake on a skewer that is exclusive to the region. Taste is savory and you can still feel the texture of the rice which is very unique. A great place to visit if you like the feel of old Japan.

I really enjoyed visiting his street I went to this street a few times once early in the morning before anything was open and it’s really pretty and very quiet. Then during the day we went and tried a little miso soup and went into one of the sake breweries. These are indicated often by the balls hanging up outside. We paid 450 yen and for that you got a little sake cup and could sample once twelve different types of sake. The one I went in had a little seated area and you got to keep your cup.
There are lots of little food vendors on the street and I recommend trying the beef skewers and the beef and potato hash. You pay at a machine and get a little receipt which you had in. The food comes very quickly. We also tried the puffs filled with different flavours . They have five flavours my husbands vegetarian so we asked not to have the sausage and then he went back and got another give cheese ones they were soo good.
We only really brought food and drink there are lots of shops but we had already picked up some craft things at the the morning market stalls.
It’s pretty touristy but definitely worth a visit.

Having read many articles about the old town, I think my expectations may have been too high. Yes it’s got some lovely old buildings, but doesn’t have that much charm. It’s good for specialty shops and dining, and strolling with the crowds, unless you go into every shop, and hour is the maximum amount of time you need.

The old townscape of Takayama is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. You can see some old shops, but I have the impression that there are many shops for tourists. During the day, there are so many tourists that you can't sit back and enjoy the cityscape. It was the first time in several years that I visited, and there are more and more foreigners.

The historic districts in Takayama are beautiful and well worth seeing. I was in Takayama for about two days and found myself here many times. There were many shops and restaurants open. In the late evening and early morning, there was hardly anyone here, so photos turned out great. It can get crowded around noon, I could only image how busy it gets here during tourist season. Visit Takayama now while you can!

A pleasant little stroll in this district of Takayama, and its wooden houses with lots of stalls selling local products. It was quiet and peaceful with few people. There is an antique dealer in one of the streets whose shop is a real Ali Baba's cave. I found an old Japanese wooden mask there at a very good price compared to other stores.

A walk is pleasant in these streets characterized by traditional historic wooden houses
There are various shops full of souvenirs and traditional food
Recommended in the late afternoon because they open late in the morning and in the evening it is deserted

Hello, I arrive in Nagano Airport on 12 Nov. Technically I have 6 nights from 12 Nov. I will like to cover Shiragawa-go; Takayama and Kiso Valley(Magome and Narai) for 6 nights before going back to Nagoya. Can anyone advise how many nights I should stay in each place please ? thank you so much!
Written 27 August 2016
Sounds like a fun trip. Since you are going mid-November, there is a pretty good chance you will encounter snow; so need to keep that in mind. Shirakawago-go is worth half to 3/4 of a day, no more. Assume you'd make this your first visit after arriving in Nagano, so you arrive late afternoon and stay the night. Next is Takayama, which is worth at least a day and a half visit.....probably two nights. Apart from the old streets and Morning Market, make sure to stroll the "temple walk" North of the city center and visit the float exhibition hall. Remember.....snow. Can't help from there.

hi, all the shops in Takayama old town closed 5pm. Is there any restaurant still open after 5pm for dinner?

Hello, we will be visiting the weekend of Oct. 10-11. We know it is the Fall festival but I would like to try sake. Are the sake breweries open on the weekends? I am also trying to understand if I should contact them beforehand but am a little confused as to how to get information...thank you in adcance!
Written 21 August 2015
This is basically a tourist district. There are a couple of stores offering sake for a minimal price. If you would like to visit the brewering process, that might not open in weekend.

I read that on weekdays some of the shops are not open. Does this mean i should not visit sanmachi suji on a weekday? If not, what other activities can one do on a weekday in takayama, aside from visit Shirakawago? :) we like sampling local eats and my husband would like to try some of the area's famous sake. thank you!
Written 20 February 2015
hi.
i was there on a weekday -- all shops were open (however they start closing at 5pm). and yes there are a some sake breweries/shops where you can try all the different sakes (for very little money) and then buy your favourite.
the hida village is reported to be a must-see; i did not have time to make it, so i cannot tell.
my favourite visit in Takayama was Takayama Jinya, a museum of Japan's best preserved local government and public services' building from the Shogun times.
