This park is famous for a reason. It is so beautiful. You really need a full day to see everything if you want to also see the garden in the castle ( next to Kenroken). Lots of interesting shops and food outside. If you want to make it really special, rent a traditional kimono ( and all the accessories and... More

Whoever said that Kenrokuen was one of the three best gardens in Japan, must be working for the Kanzawa tourism board. The garden is certainly beautiful, but overcrowded and overrated. I have been to gardens in Kyoto that left a deeper impression on me. I did not feel it was worth the trip.

No one can do a garden like the Japanese. And of all the beautiful gardens in Japan the Japanese themselves rate Kenrokuen as one of the top three. They are right, it is magnificent. I travelled in November as they were tying up the trees with rope to save the branches from breaking with the weight of the snow...where else... More

Unlike some of the other gardens we visited in Japan, this one seemed more 'genuine' and less formal than many of the others we visited. We really enjoyed just meandering through the paths and seeing so many local people.

A tranquil experience that leverages space in a different manner than other landscape gardens like Ginkakuji. The widespread use of moss in place of grass allows it to preserve its appearance during the colder months. I definitely intend to return during the spring or summer so that I can fully appreciate Kenrokuen.

Don't miss these gardens. Such a pleasure to stroll round, even in December. Would walk here every day if I lived here!

These gardens are another beautiful piece of tranquility in this vibrant little city. There are very well kept so much so that people were sweeping the moss whilst we were wandering around the gardens. It can get busy at peak times so if you can avoid them then I recommend you do so but they are a reasonable size so... More

What a lovely garden- don't miss the Villa either. Unlike western gardens it does not depend on flowers for its beauty so you can enjoy it any time of the year.
