- Andy FDevizes, United Kingdom1,277 contributionsStunning & PicturesqueThe approach to the castle couldn't be more picturesque. Surrounded by a moat with loads of huge koi carp, the castle is really a wooden defensive fortress. It absolutely looks the part. We were lucky & went straight in, but as we came out there were growing queues for entry. inside it's a bit dark and gloomy, but very interesting. if you want to, you can climb all the way to the top for some great views, but be warned that the stairs are very hard work - steep, uneven and with people coming down as you go up. Not for those with mobility problems. Definitely worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 September 2023
- Peter KRyde, Australia520 contributionsAn amazing piece of Japanese historyPretty amazing structure and museum. You have to be pretty aglie to make it to the top. The steps and floors are highly polished from the many millions of socks which have graced its floors. I took a bit of a slip so be careful.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023
- Robert MatsuokaNew York City, New York913 contributionsMust See Castle in a Charming City"The Crow" - a gorgeous black castle with many original elements, in a beautiful park near the center of Matsumoto, itself a gem on the center of Japan. Well worth a trip to the city. I especially liked the "secret floor".Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 November 2023
- Emma CGodalming, United Kingdom3,049 contributionsOne of the bestFor me, Matsumoto-jo is right up there with Himeji-jo, except fewer crowds... that's always good! It is great to visit with lots of armour type gubbins and steep staircases and is original. On the day we visited, we were able to have a local goodwill guide free of charge, without booking, who was very knowledgeable. It is definitely a must visit, in my opinion. I've been probably 6 or 7 times... I love it here!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 January 2024
- Khyron82Seattle, Washington1,833 contributionsA Walk Around the MoatWas stopping over in Matsumoto for only 3 hours, so just had time for a photo-tour around the moat. From Matsumoto Station, caught the local Oito Line train one stop north to Kita-Matsumoto Station (lonely station master), and walked East to the castle. The castle and the surrounding grounds looked beautiful in the late morning sun, and because of the higher elevation, I was able to see some autumn leaf colors in the foliage that had yet to happen in the bigger cities (at that time). Overall, nice experience without the tourist crowds, and very peaceful area too.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 January 2024
- perro2018Sydney, Australia44 contributionsBeautiful castle.Matsumoto castle locates closely from Matsumoto train station. The castle itself was beautiful, but also Matsumoto city was an interesting place to visit. One thing about Matsumoto castle was that the stairs inside were a bit slippery (polished well) and steep, and each stair was huge. I felt a bit scared when I was going down the stairs.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 February 2024

- Karen MKirkwall, United Kingdom1,240 contributionsAmazing castle that you can access with information & exhibitsThis castle is wow !! A truly awesome building, especially when lit at night. You can pay to enter the castle & access the floors via step wooden ladders - wear thick socks the day you visit, as shoes have to be left at the door. There is information within telling the history of the castle & exhibits. On reaching the top you get a great view over the gardens, moat & the town. Watch out for a variety of events that take place during the year.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 March 2024
- MissPerkyAK378 contributionsLovely ExperienceWe stopped here on a whim, and I am so glad we did! We arrived about an hour before closing. All of the samurai and other photo op characters seemed to be done for the day, but the castle was really the star. When we went, they were having their evening illuminations , which was a fun contrast compared to the castle during the day. My son was just tall enough to handle going up and down the very large and narrow steps inside the castle, something to keep in mind if you're traveling with young or short statured children, they have a hard time on the steps.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 March 2024
- bk_in_chgo03Chicago, Illinois173 contributionsGreat visit. Appreciate the free guides!Really beautiful castle with views of the surrounding mountains. Our free guide, K, which can be found just inside the grounds off the main street (coming from train station), really made the visit. She was very friendly and provided interesting information. To be fair, everyone at the castle was very friendly and worked to ensure you had a good trip.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 March 2024

Good train connections to get to Matsumoto with a really scenic train ride if you are coming from Nagano (1 hour). The castle is around 15 minute walk from main Matsumoto train station..easy to find. Entrance fee payable. As this is the oldest remaining wooden castle in Japan you have to take shoes off at entrance and carry with you in plastic carrier bags provided (which they recycle at end of tour). On each floor there are interesting exhibits about the castle history as well as a commentary played in Japanese and English on each floor. Great 360 degree views of Matsumoto and the surroundings mountains. As other visitors have warned the wooden steps between each floor are super steep so very challenging for the less abled. There are attendants by each staircase to monitor and help. There is a souvenir shop and restrooms outside of the castle but in the beautiful grounds. Lots of great photo opportunities from the gardens across the moat back to the castle. Beautiful historical Japanese castle. Must see as part of any visit to this region of Japan.

When l was told we were visiting a a castle, grey blocks of stone came to mind( l clearly wasn’t thinking logically) I was amazed to see this massive, towering wooden structure before me! Yes Japanese castles are made from wood. They have moats and tiny narrow windows for firing weapons out of and other familiar features but l have to say they are quite different from the English versions. They have a hidden extra floor that you cannot see from outside, this is just one unfamiliar feature!
We were put into groups of 5 or less and shown round by retirees who were practicing their English, what a wonderful idea! Our guide was very amusing!!
A word of warning, there are lots of steps inside, some of them steep! But make the effort, it’s well worth it!!

My ancestors resided in Matsumoto Castle during the Tokugawa, Ieyasu era so it was a very person visit for my son and I. I appreciated that there are many docents inside the castle as it has steep stairways and they controlled the enter/exit way. I was bit anxious climbing down the stairs, but no one rushed me or told me to hurry. They provided plastic bags for our shoes and had benches to sit on to put them back on after the tour. Outside, we luckily saw a re-enactor with our family mon (crest) on his flag and we eagerly requested a photo with him (attached). I would highly recommend visiting this National Treasure of Japan (one of the few original standing castles in Japan).

Just a beautiful building. The line on Sunday afternoon to get inside was over an hour so recommend, if you can, visit on a weekday. At the entrance you are given a bag for your shoes. Climbing very steep wooden steps (polished so easy to slip) in stocking feet felt dangerous so I exited quickly. Wish I’d known- I’d enjoy from the outside and not waited in line for an hour.

Impressive castle on approach, a couple of acting Samurai in the queue to the castle which was fun, happy to have photos with the visitors and play along.
Lots of staff directing the single file waiting visitors, shoes off we were instructed ( which was tricky as it’s winter and wet) once inside it’s all timber and dark, some interesting displays of firearms used once in the castles defence. No swords which we thought was odd. The stairs up the 6 levels are very steep, not for everyone as coming down was a bit of a challenge. I came down backwards like you would on a ladder.
I’m glad we went and it’s a beautiful old castle with much history.
Surround by snow capped mountains & pristine gardens
There are voluntary guides at the front gate and I regret not using one. It would be good to have some stories to go with the castle
Easy walk from the train station and loads of quaint shops and bars surround the castle grounds.
Worth the 1.5 hour train trip from Hakuba.

Walked to Matsumoto Castle from the JR station. Great piece of architecture and find yourself stepping back in time few hundred years back.
Surrounded by a moat with ducks and swan, you can just stroll around the spacious castle grounds or pay a small fee to enter the castle and walk around inside.
Our favourite photo spot is by the red bridge which offers some great photo opportunities.
Lovely place to visit.

Matsumoto castle is beautiful and iconic. As you enter, the mountains make a wonderful backdrop. There’s an entry fee and you must remove your shoes. Do go inside to see what the interior of a castle would be like. The steps are quite steep (not for the elderly or mobility impaired) and take a bit of effort to navigate. Lots of photo opportunities through the higher openings. Having a guide would be more informative but much of the information (hight, dates, names of sections) goes in one ear and out the other. The grounds are quite nice but not extensive.

after an hour walk to the japan ukiyou museum and back, and a restorative lunch we came along here.
magnificent appearance.
known as the fukahsi castle when founded in 1550.
renovated in the early 1900's and 1950's.
one of japan's premier historic castles.
a flatland castle as not on a hilltop or amid rivers.
the wooden interior feels pleasing, has steep stairs, and there is a museum for guns and weapons on the second floor, not of an interest to me.
lovely chrysanthemum exhibit.
many cherry trees on the grounds which must be amazing in the spring.
we crossed the metoba river and ended up in a really interesting area, the nakamachi street, that had old aura storehouses lining the street.
some lovely shops, had a gelato, and a delicious almond slice at a bakery.
all wonderful.
we were here in oct. 2019 and due to covid its taken me this long to write about my experiences.
we had come here after doing the magome tsumago walk and from here would return to tokyo on our last visit to japan.
have had wonderful experiences in this country.

This the black castle - one of 10 remaining fuedal castles. It is made from wood with steep stairways to defend against intruders. Don't go if you can't climb stairs. It is impressively preserved after several hundred years

One of only 20or so original castles left in Japan. Beautifully maintained and now that restrictions have lifted entrance into the castle is available with ticket purchase.
The climb on the almost verticals stairs inside is challenging and not recommended for people with physical disabilities. The views from the top are extraordinary.
We also had a free English volunteer guide to the grounds. She was excellent.

About 3 hrs from Tokyo terminal by rapid train, and 15 min from Matsumoto station by walk. If you want to sightseeing inside of Matsumoto castle, it take about 2 hrs.

Do you need to buy bullet train tickets to Matsumoto from Nagano in advance? Or you can just buy in person in Nagano station on the day itself?
Written 10 September 2019
I don’t know to be honest. We bought a 7-day Japan Rail pass to use throughout our trip because it was less expensive and very convenient. We bought that before we left and then picked up the vouchers/tickets at the airport when we arrived. We also purchased/upgraded our tickets for the bullet trains to the reserved Green Cars (first class) - none of the Green Cars we were on were full - there were plenty of seats.

Is there a tour package i can get - one day trip from Tokyo to Matsumoto castle with English speaking driver?
Written 12 June 2019
It will take you longer than one day from Tokyo to Matsumoto castle. When you get there you don't need a guide for the castle.
You would be better to take an organised tour of Japan that includes the castle. Or if you want to do it yourself, catch the train to Matsumoto and check into a hotel.
You are not going to do Tokyo to Matsumoto and back to Tokyo in one day.

Do you need to get tickets in advance or can you just go to the castle?
Written 12 December 2017
We got our tickets at the gate. I was there in Mid November and the castle was not full. Since you need to take your shoes off before entering the castle, make sure you have warm socks. The wooden floor can be cold.

Hi just wondering if there are many many people if you go around 2pm? I would hate it if i was the only one there in the afternoon
What time does the special people in samurai uniforms appear?
thanks a lot
Written 23 November 2017
Maybe its because we went in February, but we got there at 10am ( they open at 8:30) and there were only a few other people. There was a tour group that was coming in right after us, however.

They’re ‘shachi’, a mythical creature with the head of a dragon and the body of a carp. It was believed that this animal brings rain, so temples and castles were given these additions to protect them from fire.

It seems to me if you travel all the way from Australia to Matsumoto Castle you should go inside. The stair climb will be a good workout for you.

I have two nights to spend in Matsumoto (coming from Shinjuku) before heading to Kinosaki Onsen and Amanohashidate. How accessible are the tourist areas (eg Norikura Kogen, easy hiking trails) from Matsumoto. Will be visiting 28th September. Any recommendations?
Is it better to head to Kinosaki Onsen or Amanohasidate from Matsumoto? Trying to figure out the shortest travel times and hope to use the most direct routes.
Thank you>

I'm not allowed to post website addresses apparently so look up Japan Guide, Alpico Express Bus and Nouhi Bus websites. All very helpful for planning bus trips and I assume you already know about Hyderdia for trains? Really easy to use when trying to plan your best routes.

Hello, two questions;
We will be traveling with our carry-on size luggage arriving in the morning and departing in the afternoon at Matsumoto Train Station. Does the station have a storage area for carry-on sized luggage?
And since we will be by ourselves, not with a tour group, how long will getting tickets on April 5th(Tuesday) take? Should we pre-buy tickets before we arrive? We can only spend 4 hours there and don't want to be stuck in a 2 hour long line.
Thanks!

yes, there's plenty of lockers in the Matsumoto train station, And they also have limited lockers within the matsumoto castle ground, right next to the souvenir shop
