It’s an expensive ferry ride from Naoshima (¥1880 one way) but very well worth it. We took the first ferry at 920 am from Miyanoura port and arrived at 1015. We got our tickets and went straight to this museum. We were the first to arrive so we had the place to ourselves. We were really impressed with how they incorporated the artwork with the former copper refinery. After walking through, there is a path outside that leads you around the back of the refinery which most people don’t bother checking out.
We would definitely make another trip here in the future.

Just stunning. The exhibition, the island, the free styling art peppered everywhere. Almost didn’t post as want to keep it secret! If you’re anywhere near (and the one bus is running) - go!

Visiting this island only since it has once per day direct bus transportation from Okayama Train Station
Museum simple but extremely impressive design, need to see in person if modern art lover
Around 6 hours travel time if using direct Bus return trip
Recommend
- 1.5 hours for museum
- 1 hour for other art projects/points
- 1.5 hour Lunch at Uki Café
- 1 hour to finish other art projects/points
- 30 mins to head back to pier + buy sovernior

The whole island of Inujima is worth visiting if you like contemporary art, but this museum is one of the best I've been to. There are not a lot of pieces on display inside the museum--rather, the museum is interactive, in a thrilling, somewhat scary way. I won't write about what makes the museum so great because that would give away the "ending"--you simply must come and see / experience for yourself.
The museum is set into a partially refurbished copper refinery; the bricks outside the main museum and the chimneys make great photo opps.
If you really want to be freaked out, visit the toilets while you're there (again, I won't spoil the surprise by telling).

the museum's exhibit is very niche, focusing on one subject: Yukio Mishima. i am not familiar with his works but still find the museum and its structure and surrounding landscape very fascinating. walking through the ex-factory museum itself is quite a trip and the architect and artist have make ingenious use of the extended premise.
the place is quite big if you are to visit every corner of the outdoor area as well, great views of the Seto Inland Sea from different parts of the factory, picture-perfect at every point.
inside the museum there are staff monitoring flow of visitors at certain areas (to optimise your experience) so be aware if you are on a tight schedule, not one of those places which you can just waltz through. having said that we felt the time taken to visit this museum and then the rest of the island's main projects falls kinda perfect with the ferry schedule, so someone must have timed and curated this for visitors.

This old copper refinery is now converted to a unique industrial, architecture and art project. Very exciting with the recycling ideas. When you are on this small island don´t miss all the other outdoor installations just as interesting as the refinery.

Inujima is the site of an old copper refinery, and it's a unique and perfect setting for the art works and installations at the museum. The cafe serves delicious food too.

Its rather hard to describe the museum without going in to lots of detail.

The ruins of this old former copper refinery of 1909, was re-appropriated in 2008 to house a museum. It sits on the small island of Inujima, named after a large rock resembling a sitting dog. Surrounded by water, the walk through the old furnaces is mystrious and beautiful at the same time.
