As I have known Lake Shikotsu is a crater lake, I've been wondering why it has a gourd-like shape, narrowed on the north and the south shores. The center revealed the story to me. The lake used to be round. There were two eruptions along...More

Japanese are very methodical and polite. Good place to learn about local fauna and flora. Beautiful view of lake albeit foggy view when I was there!

You can rent a bicycle from the center and return it at Chitose station. It'll take close to 2-hours one way. The center itself has a pretty decent exhibit too, to kill time.

Most attractions we found in Hokkaido do not charge for parking unless you are in the city or somewhere really busy. So why does Shikotsu feel they can charge people for parking in what is basically a national park. Frustrated by this, we waited till...More

This is a really useful vistor centre where we can find out more about the history of Lake Shikotsu. I call it Lake Shikotsu, as Shikotsuko means Shikotsu lake (ko = lake) so it is weird to call it lake twice. =)
