Ornate and colorful, this historical building is fun to look at. The interior is not as exciting...there are several rooms complete with furniture of the era but I feel the interior overall could use a makeover. As a bonus, you get a nice view of Hakodate famous hills from the building's 2nd floor.

The old Public Hall is a beautiful European style building, a blast from the past and a good visit in the area.

The old public hall of Hakodate is situated midway up the hill overlooking the inner harbour of Hakodate. From the wide balcony on the second floor you have great panoramic view over the city of Hakodate and the harbour area. The mixture of classic japanese and the european style of the 19th century are alive in this place and of... More

This grand, two-story wooden structure opened in 1910 and stands high on a hill in Hakodate's Motomachi area. I think it is the best of the remaining Western-style buildings that went up in the city after Japan opened to Western trade in 1859. I like the brilliant fusion of Japanese patterns and Western architecture, and I especially like the exterior... More

This place is worth seeing, especially for the floor in theupstairs hall. There are more elaborate historic buildings in terms of room furnishings, but few could surpass the incredible, mirror-like wooden floor in the Concert Hall. The interesting history of the building is also described by displays in other rooms.

Average place-of-interest. Enjoy the architecture and lights at night. Can't see view of the city as blocked by trees. Admission fee to enter the hall but exhibits were in Japanese so you don't really understand, but could take tons of photos. Even at the second floor, the view is so-so and you can get better views elsewhere for free. Worth... More
