Otaru itself is probably the worst ever holiday destination I ever visited. Otaru Canal , I would rate this only 1/10. Nothing spectacular. Perhaps October is not the right time but apart from a few old warehouse-turned-restaurants and shop houses, nothing at all. Please do...More

Departure from the Otaru Canal, a lot of seabirds, exquisite balance rocks, you can also meet dolphins if you are lucky. And ahead of a pitch dark cave is a touching and beautiful blue! Feed the seagulls feeling so high on the way back.

Many tourists come to a little port town,Otaru, with expecting to see Otaru canal which is a water way for tranporting all goods to warehouses and do shopping at Sakaimachi street. I think Otaru canal view in winter day and night during illumination event is...More

This is another so-called Otaru "attraction" that I didn't understand the hype about. The canal is basically a standard man-made waterway, the type that you can find a million times over in most big cities near water. Its surroundings are not particularly pretty. Much like...More

Worth a visit...mainly it's quite a place for photo ops. Take a walk along the banks or the cruise..then go to the shopping street

Taking JR from Sapporo to Otaru Came out the station walking about 15 min to the Otaru canal not really long this canal . But it is charming. You can walk along or set at the coffee shop looking at it . Very relaxed.

Spent the day in Otaru this month (September 3rd, 2018). The canal area is very interesting with it’s industrial/historical feel. The canal boat ride takes you all the way down the canal and into the ocean. Less than a mile away you can see the...More

This was a nice ride on the boat. You get a headphone with English so you can hear what the history is. Well worth the price.

Nothing much to do here, except walking around the canal and taking photos. Suggest this as a quick stop before going to the shopping street (more to see in that street).

Perhaps it is transformed into a magical winter wonderland, but without snow, it seemed a simple canal lined with old industrial warehouses that have been converted into upscale boutique shops, restaurants, and bars. A pedestrian path lines one side of the canal, and there is...More

If the rapid trains are running, the JR train from Sapporo to Otaru is only about 30minutes, hence plenty of time for day trip. However, if traveling during the winter season, please check train schedules as there were bad... More
