Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I arrived at around 8am.
The closest parking lot was 1000 yen, a little further away it was 500 yen, and further away there were free lots. However, the free lot seemed to open from 9am, so I parked in an unmanned lot that cost 500 yen.
Because it was early in the morning, there was no one else there and it was great to have the lot to myself.

Hakone is congested even on weekdays during the autumn foliage season, so if you arrive at 10am on a weekday, the roads are smooth. There is free parking at Susuki-no-hara from September to November, so use that. The parking lot is not paved and is divided into sections with ropes. If your car is low, it will scrape. There are temporary toilets. Turn at the Sengokuhara intersection and go about 50m on Prefectural Route 75. There is a sausage shop on the left, go right from there (towards the Botanical Garden) and you will arrive at the parking lot.
If you stay on Route 75, you can drive while looking at the Susuki-no-hara on both sides.
You can see the Susuki-no-hara in about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot, but the entrance is further to the right. It is on the opposite side of Lawson.
It's a little hard to find...
The park is a single road that goes up about 700m without getting lost. It's a gravel road, so heels are dangerous.
You might slip if it rains? ?
On the way back (after 12 o'clock), there was a traffic jam on Route 1 towards Hakone...
The Japanese silver grass was bushy and brown all the way down to the stems, but it might be nice when the stems are still green.
I think it would be even bushier in mid-November.

Sengokuhara Susuki(Japanese pampas grass) is famous for Autumn view. Beautiful view of pampas grass field and you can hike there. Take bus to 'sengokuhara kogen' and go toward lawson and turn right. It is really beautiful.

From various literature, it was said to be a place where beautiful grass scenery could be seen and walked through. First of all, it was extremely hard to get there. The bus (board with Hakone Free pass on a week day) was full of people carrying large.luggage. They should not be allowed to get onto the bus, which was a normal timetabled bus with no luggage space. Second, there was no direct route to the grass field. We had to change at Sengoku, which was a VERY small town undeveloped for any tourist facilities - nothing to see, eat, nor walk at the side of the road. Third, when we got there, the grass seemed to have burnt. The grass on the whole slope was like being cut and blacked out. Fourth, being disappointed, we tried to get to Gotemba but again, we were unable to board the bus at Sengoku because it was full of people. The bus did not even open the door. The worst thing was, the next bus would be an hour later at that time of day. Ridiculously, the bus driver told us (from his PA system) to wait for next bus. We finally decided to go back to the hotel. The return bus was also almost full but at least we could get on. The whole saga wasted us 3 hours.

We drove past it several times in our rental car without realizing that the expansive rolling green field was Sengokuhara. A tiny sign by the road said, "Please protect the swamp forest." That was it! No other signs, not even a car park.
I can imagine how beautiful it must be in autumn when the grass is tall and the golden tops dance in the wind. In May, during our visit, the place is a just big green field.

How this is an attraction somewhat puzzles me. It is certainly a nice walk, and you can take nice pictures, but at the end of the day it is just a mountainside of grass. It seems to be very popular with the Japanese though, so we felt compelled to take part in it (and so should you).

The day we walked here from our hotel nearby the access road for walkers was closed because of the typhoon which had passed by, so we could only see it from the main road. It is a beautiful grassland area and we did enjoy looking at the wind blowing through the grass.

When we asked the hotel receptionist for directions, she said it wasn't in season, and recommended some other places to visit.
But we decided to go anyway, it's also directly on the route of the bus.
We were there early March, and it was just a sea of yellow.
I read a previous review that said 'it's literally a field of grass', the reviewer isn't wrong, but what a beautiful field of grass!
Dress warmly, take a nice long walk, and soak in the serenity!

The photos speak for themselves. I am unable to comment on the view in other seasons but it was certainly amazing in autumn. The bus is pretty convenient to get here as it's about a 5 min walk from the bus stop.

I would like to know if it is recommended to visit Sengokuhara for the snowy view in January.
Written 24 November 2017
I'm sorry but I think it is not worth to do. It's better to visit Lake Ashi on snowy day.
