If you are in Hakone, this is a real MUST! It is not your usual museum and it is anything and everything that a museum is. Set in a large park into which amazing art pieces are blended into nature and vegetation, Do not miss this one.

There was a lot of both English and Japanese commentary for most of the pieces. The Picasso museum was interesting and there were a lot of pieces that gave insight into who Picasso was as a person, as well as an artist. Perfect for walking around if the weather's good.

We spent two hours but could have spent double that time. It had sculptures everywhere and all were worth standing and observing for several minutes. Yes, Picasso's work is on display in a designated building with high quality works of art. But, it is much more than that. The Henry Moore sculptures were good. We loved the Symphonic Tower! The... Wonderful, out-of-the-way art excursion. Myself and my group ran around like little kids. The museum was closing in an hour and we wanted to see everything. We had a running sweat and smiles plastered to our faces. We definitely took a break to soak in the foot bath hot springs :) We were the last people to leave the museum... More

Words and pictures do not do this place justice. I have never been to a more tranquil and gorgeous museum. Even if you aren't into sculpture/art, you should go. The scenery itself is just beautiful. (Hint: Follow every path, even if you're not sure whether it goes anywhere. There are a few hidden surprises.)

The museum seems like one of those put together by someone with a lot of passion for this type of art but not finding enough A+ pieces to make the museum truly great. The statues around the museum are all very average in quality and only some pieces truly stick out. Got to give it to the museum, though, the... More

This is a really great open-air museum with varied sculptures around lovely manicured grounds. There are koi ponds and a maze, a pool to soak your sore feet, and an indoor Picasso exhibit with works of his that I personally had never seen nor heard of. My issue with this museum is that is could be anywhere. I went to... More

The Hakone Open-air is situated a little outside the city of Hakone and displays a fine collection of modern sculpture scattered around green fields. There is also a Picasso Museum with a good selection of the artist's work from different periods of his career. The visitor is free to wander along shaded paths and past streams and admire the works... More
