First time visiting an onsen and it was great - highly recommend. We took the romancecar to get to Hakone-Yumoto station - it's about 1.5hrs and easy to book. From the station there's a bus that takes you directly to the onsen in less than 5 minutes. We used the public baths, seems like a lot of other review were for the private options. We bought a small bath towel for ~$5 but I'd recommend just brining one from your hotel. Once signed in, you drop off your shoes in a locker, they give you a key and free to store, then go get naked in the change room - lockers there are free as well. The bath are nice and relaxing - stones and concrete that look off at the mountain and trees (no Fuji views). We were there around 12pm on a Thursday and there was about 12 people in total. So maybe 1-2 people in each pool. Definitely didn't feel crowded. There's a sauna as well that's outside with the baths that you can pop into. Once you're done, easy to get ready and take the shuttle back to the train - the shuttle runs every 15min (or check the schedule). We were able to just catch the next romancecar back - maybe waited 20 min. Super easy day trip from Tokyo to experience an onsen.

We had a wonderful time at Hakone Yuryo! When we arrived, we told them we would like to quickly grab something to eat understanding it would count against our room time, but they were incredibly accommodating and agreed to move our reservation slightly later so we could eat lunch at their restaurant. The food at their restaurant was wonderful!

We reserved a private room (Type 2) for two hours. They provided each of us with a kimono to wear, gave us the key to our room, and directed us to it. Once you are in the room, there are multiple pairs of the traditional wooden slip-on shoes. The room at a table, sink, mirror, fridge, and some seats. On the other side of the room was a clear sliding door which opened to the outside.

On the other side of the door was the large stone bath. There was also a small area to wash your body and your hair before entering the bath. The walls on either side of the bath protrude out far so there is no risk of people in other rooms viewing or interacting with you. While it is open on one side, it looks out on a forested area not conducive for people to walk around in (i.e., it's very private).

My wife has a tattoo on her back, so it was not showing when we went to the front desk to check in. If you go with a private room, you do not change clothes/undress before being in your private room, so it does not matter if you have a tattoo (despite them saying they will not allow people to visit with tattoos). Obviously be sure to cover it when checking in and if they ask/you decide to put on the kimono and leave the room during your session back into the public area.

We went with another couple who also rented a private Type 2 room. They also had a wonderful experience.

We would highly recommend this to anyone going to the greater Tokyo/Kanto area and/or looking for a private Onsen experience!

An Onsen experience is a must do if you are visiting Japan. We were mesmerised by our experience at Hakone Yuryo in a private room. We had a Type 2 room, which offered us a wonderful view of the woods when you are in the Onsen water (with the required privacy). Hakone Yuryo is easily accessible from Tokyo in a day trip, the 2 hours alloted are sufficient for a relaxing onsen experience. We visited when the weather was a tad chilly (about 9 - 10 degrees C), which made the Onsen spring waters even more welcoming.

Suggestions : Take a Type 2 or Type 3 private room - they are spacious and have a wonderful view of the woods. Visit when there is daylight, so that you get a view of the woods / birds chirping.

I booked a private room for 2 hours. It was perfect. The receptoin could handle me with my bad Japanese and the spoke English quite well. I took a type 2 room (#5) which had an open view on the forrest and the train tracks.
As it was a weekday and early in the morning (10-12) it was quite peaceful and quiet. I can't say how a holiday or weekend would look like.

There is a bus shuttle directly at the exit of Hakone-Yumoto Station, which runs every 15 minutes or so. I would not recommend to walk the distance, because the street is quite steep and narrow and quite dangerous with ongoing traffic going by.

We took the Hakone day pass and made the rounds as suggested by Japan travel.com. We ended our day tour at around 5pm and decided to give Yuryo a try before heading back to Shinjuku. We spent about an hr here and was very relaxing. This is one of the bigger onsens here and they try to accommodate the crowds that frock here after a day of tireless travel around Hakone. The water is good and its well worth it. We even finished with dinner here. This place is highly recommended for day trippers before heading back to Tokyo.

The experience was quite out of expectation.

It was September when we were at Japan for our holiday. Because the weather was still quite warm, we didn't expect we might enjoy the spa. We still booked one since we did want to try the onsen in Japan.

At the time I stepped into the host spring, I realized that how worth it is to have an onsen even in summer. We totally enjoyed it so much.

Only one thing is that it would be good if they can provide a bottle of water in the room.

Tips:

1, book one private room. My wife and I booked a room Type 2 (for 4 persons). We feel that it's the right size even for 2-person.

2, bring a bottle of water with you. There are complimentary snacks in the private room, but no water.

My bf and I just rented a private hot bath here. It's so nice and peaceful. We had our own room with the hot bath, towels, shampoo and conditioner, brush, hair ties and lotion. And there was a mini refrigerator in the room too.
It was perfect!
Bring water and snacks. Otherwise you can order food from there.

I discovered Onsen when I visited Japan 5 yrs ago and fell in love then. When I knew I was returning it was on the list to do again .

This place is lovely - I didn't allow long enough - you need 2 hrs or more if you want to eat as I did.

Don't be put off by having to be naked. Nobody looks and it is part of the pleasure.

There is both indoor and outdoor areas. The staff are very helpful and speak good English. They even charged my phone.

So, be brave. Take the plunge (but slowly). You won't regret it!
