Nice sake with the owner speaking fluent English to explain
Jun 2019 • Couples
We then proceeded to visit a nearby sake brewery Watanabe Sadahiro 渡边佐平商店. Started in 1842, this brewery is in Imaichi 今市市, about 400m above sea level. Cool in summer and very cold in winter, the city offers the perfect weather for making good sake.

Its very pure and high-quality water flows from Kegon Falls 華厳の滝. The brewery has a well in front of the shop where many people come to take water. These are not only from the neighbors but also people coming from other prefectures.

Apart from water, the choice of rice is as important. The brewery has been using 五百万石, grown by farmers in Nikko, for their most famous sake 純米吟醸日光誉. In addition, they are using locally produced rice in Tochigi prefecture as much as possible.

The owner spoke fluent English and explained to us the different sake in their range. There was also a special set of sake cups which could be used to play a drinking game, and depends on the roll of the dice, the person would drink the whole cup (of different size) bottom-up.

I decided to buy a couple of sake to bring back home, going for their prestigious 純米大吟醸清開 and きざけ日光誉 徳利. The former is the premium sake featuring pure finesse while the latter is a pure rice original sake, without adding water to dilute, so having a higher alcohol and richer flavors.

Sake brewing guided tour
Nov 2017 • Family
We were looking for things to do while in Nikko and found reviews for this family owned and run Sake brewery.

The family are so welcoming and helpful. We did not know anything about Sake and had never really even tried Sake.

We were give a guided tour by one of the owners. He was so helpful and explained the whole process and did his best to educate us on Sake. It was very interesting and even our 7 and 9 year old boys enjoyed the tour and the history. The family has run this brewery for over 175 years.

We enjoyed the Sake tasting and experience. I recommend contacting them beforehand to check they are able to give you a tour as this is a working brewery.

Traditional Sake Brewery Tour available in English !
Oct 2016 • Friends
This traditional brewery in Nikko (2 hours north of Tokyo) is very rare that it offers guided tours in English by the owner himself !
I really enjoyed the tour and he was he happy for me to live stream the tour while he showed me around. At the end he let me taste 5 different Sake brewed in the brewery which all were delicious. Great hospitality. I recommend you email the brewery in advance to book an English tour if you are in Nikko.

So awesome
Mar 2016 • Couples
We visited this sake brewery as part of an organised Intrepid tour of Japan (a group of 12), and I loved it.
We were shown around by the President of Watanabe Sahei Shouten, Yasuhiro Watanabe (I asked for his card), and he was so much fun, with a great command of English. He had spent time in Adelaide, Australia, so knew all about our cardboard wine casks, etc. So even though he is the President of the company/brewery (his family have been brewing sake since 1842), he was both informative and without pretention.
We tried all 5 varieties, with no limits on the number of tastes.
I had to buy a bottle, even a small one, as a reminder.
Brilliant!

Fun Sake Tour
We popped into this place and got a tour of the of the distillery by the owner - he's a real character! We tried five different sake and there was no limit on how much we could try - smart move by the owner as we each bought 2-3 bottles! It's cheaper to buy here than on the high street too. We left a little merry!

Easily accessible by JR - only a few stops
