Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The only way up here is by a road. For some reason the walking track was closed. Why? So many tourists mulling around the entrance puzzled at the logic behind this decision.

Walked through the main entrance but can down a lovely gravel road through the forest. Good views of city. Lovely forest.

about 3km from the base and maybe 200-240 meters of vertical rise, and good panoramic view of Nara from the top. The hike through the preserved forest is on well maintained wide paths, with a couple nice rest stop gazebos along the way. At the top there are vending machines (at a 30% markup from the machines at the bottom of the hill).

There is a gravel track all the way to the top, takes maybe three quarters of an hour moderate walking pace, not strenuous. Decent view from the top.

On the 4th Saturday of January, there is a special celebration where the Mount Wakakusa is set on fire at the end of a long ceremony in several steps. Very interesting!

At the top of Mt Wakakusa, you will be able to see all of Nara at your feet. Many deer roam by, but the feeling is much more freer than the ones you might encounter in Nara Park. We drove up there and paid a small charge of 520 yen for access. On a fine day you can see the surrounding mountains. Very enjoyable visit.

Visiting Nara is a venture in the heavily populated. This is no reason to avoid the place, but the little slivers of tranquility are even more poignant when the vast majority of time is spent in the company of so many other individuals. Hiking up to Mt. Wakakusa is not a strenuous activity, nor is it very time consuming. Once at the top you will be greeted with a stellar view of the city as well as deer who are hopeful you've saved some deer crackers for the summit. Sitting on the benches or the grass with curious deer and beautiful views is not something to hurry on from. If you have the time to properly do the hike and revel in it's beauty then Mount Wakakusa will not disappoint you in the slightest.

Easy hike for any age group in exchange for a brilliant view on 3 different peaks. Hike takes about 2-3h if many stops are taken. Worth it.

We went to see the mountain burning festival in late January. There were lots of people but the foot of the hill was spacious enough for everyone to get a good view. They had fireworks with background music for at least 20 mins before the burning as well so overall a very enjoyable experience.

Came here spontaneously after we discovered we can hike here, we were pleasantly surprised!
Ambience: 4.5/5
Cleanliness: 4.5/5
Physical Ease: 4/5
Fun: 4.5/5
Value for Money: 5/5
The Good: Easy hike up, we managed to do it within 30 mins, coming down was around 20 mins, but the sights were just marvellous, and it's easily the best scenic views around the Nara
region.
The Bad: We had to pay Y150 for the ride up, I thought it was for free, but wells.. Still overall it was quite fun!
The Bottom Line: Worth the trip up, and worth coming again, at the right time, we would visit again when we revisit Kyoto!

Hi, the latest review says that the walking track is closed. Does anyone know if it will still be closed in Mid May?
Written 15 April 2019
Not sure about that but there are many many walking tracks. I suggest you may ask the hotel staffs who speak Japanese to call and find out when you first arrived in Japan.

Does anyone know if 5pm is the last entry time or the time you need to get off the mountain?
Written 2 March 2019
It is the last entry time for visitors.
If you stay in the hotels, you can enter but booking/hotel key etc is needed.

1. How can i get to the 'entrance' of the south trail at mount wakakusa?
2. How long does it take to climb Mount wakakusa if I take the south trail?
3.How do I get there using public transportation?

I plan a trip to Nara with my family so I will have 1 and 2 years old kids there too. How hard is it to climb to top of hill with kids?
Written 31 May 2017
It is a little bit hard for babies to climb the hill to the top. However, even if you don't climb, near the entrance gate you can sit down on lawn and enjoy beautiful scenery. Anyway the admission is inexpensive (just $1 or $2). So, it is worthy to visit.
