Originally constructed in 588 in Asuka and named Hokoji Temple it was moved to Nara in 710 when Nara became the capital of Japan and was renamed Gangoji. Little remains of the original buildings but, even so, it is still impressive. The main Hall contains...More

An amazing structure built in the 600's, then pulled down and moved to the current site in Naramachi, Nara in the 700's, using the same materials.

Worth a visit if you are in the area but don't go out of your way as there are plenty of better temples in the region.

A well designed and ancient structure. The entire site is elegant. Just a few structures but each lovely on its own and well integrated.

The oldest Buddhist temple in Japan is a mere shadow of its former glory today, and is somewhat off Nara's main tourist path, resulting in a wonderful place to visit - lots of history, very few people!

Gangoji like all other temples at Nara, has remarkable history over at least 1000 years. Yet its scale pales against Kofukuji. If one has limited time at Nara, I suggest visiting Todaiji and Kofukuji first.

Not just that, but also very quiet which helps creating a mysterious atmosphere. The chanting of the Buddhist monks added even more.
