A small and interesting museum with old statues of religious and historic value. Most of the panels are in Japanese and we did not get an audio guide which seemed to us a little too expensive for the size of the museum. We walked around looking at everything but we wished there were some explanations in English for the tourists.... More

This cultural center is in the way to Todaiji temple and has many beautiful and majestic statues including one of thousand hand Avalokitesvera.

Considering that many people go to Todaiji, the cultural center is less visited, and makes a complete visit of the temple. If you're only interested in the temple, you can skip this center.

A great place to visit to see (worship) the awesome Buddha image made of wood. You can feel the tranquility of the temple and the walk on the approach. There is a pillar with a hole in it for you to slip through which I did, but not 40 years later.

We visited the Todaiji Temple on our last day in Nara and found it quite interesting. There's plenty of deer walking around on the way to the temple but don't get distracted! When you enter there is an incredibly large Buddha with lots of small Buddhas surrounding him. There is also a stall where you can write down your wish... More

I recommend a visit to the not-to-be-missed cultural center and museum at the Todaiji Temple. It's air-conditioned! Has great restrooms, a gift shop with high quality souvenirs, a sitting area with an interesting video documentary on the temple, a tearoom with Japanese style refreshments (I admit I would have preferred an icy cold Coca Cola on a roasting hot July... Incredible place / superstructure / icon of architecture. It is enormous from the outside and from the inside:) The sitting Buddha is a fantastic piece of art and a spiritual icon in the same time.

One funny thing, is that they have one wood pillar with a squere hole on it... and people keep passing inside it. The explanation: the hole has the same size as Buddha's nose hole, and if you can go thru it, you will be a good person! I needed some effort...

After a while, all the temples look the same to me. This one is special and worth a visit if you are in the Nara area. There is a herd of 1100 semi wild deer the wander the area - a diversion and Facebook target practice range. ¥500 to enter the temple where the big Budda is. Free to just... More
