Buddhism Culture at its best

We were awed by the different statues of Buddhism Culture. So many were displayed. II wrote them down so I can google them after. Awesome!

Unless you're very into Japanese history, or there's a special exhibition, but for an average tourist, this museum is quite boring. With entrance fee of ¥1100 this is a waste of my money and time.

The museum's permanent collection includes Buddhist statues, paintings, scrolls and ceremonial objects mainly from Japan. The new wing also houses temporary exhibitions, including an annual exhibition every autumn of treasures from Todaiji Temple. A ticket to the museum gives access to both wings, and English explanations are available throughout the museum.

Mostly I saw wooden sculptures of the Buddha from various periods. It was interesting to know the process of making wooden statuea. This was very well explained in the area outside the museum near the museum cafeteria. Its the subway passage between the permanent exhibits and special exhibition gallery. Very intricate work. Bronze and wooden statues are there in the... More

We caught the museum in transition, so currently only its buddha sculpture hall is open until the rest of the museum's new installations are completed. The buddha sculpture hall was a perfect bite-size museum experience and we learned a lot about the depiction of buddha and other deities. Really wanted to see the zen buddhist art hall, but that was... More

I was hoping to learn something about the history of Nara but was disappointed. The museum has interesting artifacts: statues, calligraphy, paintings etc. but it did not (to me at least) put the while thing in context. For someone who already knew something about the history of Nara (and history of Buddhism), I am sure this would have been a... More

We went to Nara to visit to visit Todai-ji temple, but on the way there we noticed this museum and decided to visit it at the end if there was enough time. Luckily we went back before the closing time and could visit it. Part of it was closed due to renovation, but there was an interesting temporary exhibition about... More

The Nara National Museum is located in Nara Park just a few minutes walk from the Kintetsu Nara station. The museum is spread over two buildings: the original museum and a new wing which are connected via an underground section in which reside the museum cafe and shop and facilities. The museum has a huge collection of buddhist images and... More

Ancient arts, painting, calligraphies take you right back to that old time and time stood still... you will be amazed how the Japanese captured the beauty of their religious beliefs in so many different art forms. I highly recommend a visit there!

This museum is located on Sanjodori Street close to Dodaiji temple complex. It consists of two buildings connected by an underground passage. The entrance is in the newer building. Here there are two wings to display rotating exhibits. When we were there, the exhibits were on the making of Japanese paper (Washi) and Masterpieces of Buddhist Art. The permanent collection...
