After a day battling crowds in Kyoto, we decided to find somewhere off the beaten track, and settled on Wakayama castle. An easy 45minute express train ride from Osaka. - Even though we hadn't reserved seats the guard let us sit in the reserved section as the unreserved was full, and wakayama is the first stop. Tourist-weary guards in more... More

The castle park is really nice, and the approach up to the castle passes through some nice paths and thick castle walls. Just outside the castle there are staff dressed up as ninjas who are happy to pose and take pictures. The castle itself is really incredible, the interior also houses a huge amount of artifacts, from scrolls to various... More

Wakayama Castle is a convenient 10 minutes bicycle ride from the JR Wakayama Station. You could easily get a bus out to the castle if you're not inclined to bike it. This castle has a little more than most. On the inside there are heaps of weapons and body armours kits on display. Some items you're not allowed to take... More

We visited the place in mid-March 2017. We spend around 90 minutes there, visiting the main castle tower, and the gardens (the park). There are artifacts displayed in the castle tower which are very interesting. The park is also worth visiting - there is a beautiful pond with a wooden, all-covered bridge which is very unique.

I loved Wakayama Castle. It's actually one of the main reasons to visit the city. It was time of sakura/cherry blossoms and this made the place lively with families, friends and all types of people just laying on the ground talking, eating and even karaoke. I must say its a wonderful way of immersing in the Japanese culture. The castle... More

Beautiful castle despite the weather was bad. Nice to have a morning walk or seeing the sunset. You can listen to local musicians who play in the gardens.

I collect Japanese castles, meaning I try to visit as many as I can and have seen a fair few in Japan. This Castle is set in a large park and it is a nice walk up there. It is not the original structure, it was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt. There was not much to see inside... More

Excellent exercise. Many steps to climb and it's gorgeous. Certainly better than Osaka Jo and maybe better than Himeji
