Needs to be closed down
Feb 2020 • Couples
Terrible place. Needs to be shut down. We walked through here to get to the castle. Had already read bad reviews but thought it can't possibly be that bad. Well it was. Animals are in tiny, concrete enclosures. Some animals are on their own - even gregarious animals such as the Meerkat. They all looked very cold and very sad.

The most horrible place in Japan
Nov 2019 • Couples
I have visited many beautiful places all around japan over the years. We decided to stay two nights in wakayama city this time around inspired by all the articles written about this undiscovered area. I have to say though, this “zoo” really put a damper into our stay. Please do not support this place, or if you do come, please say something or give it a bad review so that maybe they will close down and rehome the animals to better facilities.

The animals are kept in small and rundown enclosures. I’m no expert but the penguins (compared to ones we just saw at Osaka aquarium) looked unwell. My heart especially broke for the singular bear huddled in the corner in it’s sad cage. The one meerkat was pacing back and forth stressed- I thought they’re were pack animals? I really did not want to see the rest of the “zoo” but forced myself to see at least half of it to confront the harsh reality these animals are living. I’ve been to Vietnam and have seen even more terrible “zoos” of animals kept in literally just cages out in the open air and hosed down daily. This Wakayama “Zoo” was just one step above that. It’s surprises me greatly as I have such high expectations of Japan’s quality. Please shut this horrendous and archaic place down. Who do I need to write a letter to?

At least it's free.

Wandered in here while looking around the park beneath the castle. I assume it is free, nobody tried to take our money!
Not much in there, more of a petting zoo really, interesting enough to kill half an hour..

Neglected and sad
Apr 2018
We walked passed here and tried to ignore the small caged animals and birds. There was a very sad looking large bear that really upset me. Avoid this place if you can.

A small zoo in Wakayama Castle compound
Nov 2017 • Couples
It's a small zoo in Wakayama Castle compound. If you visit Wakayama Castle, you should also visit this zoo as the admission is included in the ticket. You don't have to pay any additional fee. But it's not worth to go just to see the zoo itself if you have no intention to visit Wakayama Castle.

Terrible
Jul 2017 • Friends
The animals are in tiny cages, and the environment is very bad and smelly. Some animals even fight with each other and you can see their feathers being plucked off them.
I hope they stop having this zoo, send the animals to a better place of living, and change the place into a park.

Wakayama zoo - Not good - so bad.
May 2017 • Business
My husband and I were recently in Japan. We visited Wakayama Castle and didn't realize there was a zoo. I found the zoo small and not properly setup for the animals. I found it truly depressing and cruel. These animals were in small cement cages - not at all appropriate for thriving or happiness. I could not even take pictures that I found it so bad. These animals were pacing and clearly not happy in their situation. It was heart wrenching.

Saw it from Wakayama castle on top - too small

I don't think it is worth your time, from the little i can see from top of hill. Very small, some animals in cages, and very few visitors (even in summer).

Awful
Apr 2017 • Family
Terribly cruel little free entry zoo with animals going insane from loneliness and suffering. Why do the nature loving Japanese still put up with these little zoos? Awful awful awful.

Very depressing to see the animals here
May 2016 • Solo
I love Japan, and I love Wakayama, but I can't defend or find good points about this zoo. It's shockingly depressing, the state of the animal enclosures is terrible, the whole place seems very run down and uncared for.

The health and state of the animals was worrying, their environments were poor, not clean, had little in the way of comfort, things to interact with, play with or spaces to exercise in. The animals themselves looked weak, maybe underfed or not being given the right diet, their drinking water also looked stale and at least a few days old sitting stagnant.

Seeing many of the animals they seemed weak and defeated, looking into the eyes of some I really could feel their spirits had been broken and they'd given up, I wished there was a way I could help them.

It's very saddening that unfortuenly the regulations on animal welfare here do seem so far behind, as a place like this really is a dark cloud over the jewel that is Wakayama. The zoo is free, and I wonder if maybe that's why it has become so run down and almost abandoned, as it doesn't generate them any revenue.
