Accessing closely is not allowed. But, this is the symbol of Kagoshima and it's good to see. When I visited Kagoshima, I have very few days to see it clearly because it's mostly cloudy and rainy. It erupts almost everyday. Watching it during eruption is...More

Visited the Island and took the local bus tour and stopped off for an hour at a couple of the potteries. Great designs with unusual pottery made from clay combined with ash. Not cheap stuff and ranging between 2000¥ - 60000¥ ! The public bus...More

We went thinking we would hike around the area but took the tourist shuttle bus instead. If we had gotten there earlier we may have stuck to our guns and walked around. There are not hiking trails we would have done our walking all on...More

We saw the volcano Sakurajima very briefly on our recent cruise call to Kagoshima. It was just visible when our cruise ship docked, and we got a photo but thereafter it was covered by heavy cloud. An excursion would have been a waste of time.
