Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place is meant for the bus loads of tourists to disembark before entering the castle. There are plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops but all meant for foreign tourists. I wouldn’t eat or buy anything here as they are relatively more expensive than outside. We only spent half hour here and ran out of things to do.

If you don't have much time in Kumamoto and have a few hours to kill, this is the place for you. Lots of eateries and souvenirs. Great for families with older people and younger kids as it is traffic-free and safe to just wander within the compounds of the place without worries of getting lost.

There is a museum, tourist information center, specialty souvenir shops and restaurants. There are scheduled shows as well. Tried the fish delicacies, lotus root with a spicy karashi miso, Ikinari dango, and Matcha soft ice cream. Yummy food.

It is unfortunate that I came to Kumamoto after the quake. Most of the attractions and places to visit are closed and Sakuranobaba is one of the few places open for tourists but it is a good place to see and have your Kumamoto food trip. There's a show during mid day but I am not sure if it happens daily. Made up for the let down of not seeing the Kumamoto Castle. Too bad even the Waku Wakuza is closed :(

It is just a purpose-built area with eateries right next to the Kumamoto Castle so you kind of have to go through it either before entering or after leaving the castle as it is right there. Very crowded.

Josaien, located in Sakuranobaba, is a tourist spot designed to revive the old castle town. It is lined with 23 of Kumamoto’s shops including restaurants, coffee shops, and goods stores. Among which is a bar where you can enjoy Kumamoto wine as well as find a variety of Kumamoto souvenirs. While in Josaien you can also visit Wakuwakuza, a facility where you can learn about Kumamoto’s history while having a variety of experiences related to the city.

After you have visited Kumamoto Castle, you can take free shuttle bus service at the exit of the castle with 7 minutes only. You can have lunch and buy many local souvenirs there.

We stumble across this place on our way to Kumamoto castle and really enjoyed it. There are many food stalls which sell great desserts and local food/gifts. The museum inside was perfect for my children who enjoyed dressing up in kimono and watching a short film about the castle. (with English subtitle). There is also free shuttle bus from the bus stop to the castle. You can stop for a coffee break before or after the castle visit for a break. Lots of outdoor sitting benches for visitors to rest.
