After walking all the way through Shimotori shopping arcade you can turn slightly right and continue your shopping experience down in Shinshigai arcade. Basically the same type of shopping excitement but a bit more restaurants down here I would say.
Shinshigai Shotengai is a major shopping street in Kumamoto. The street is covered by arcades. So even in a rainy day, you can enjoy shopping. Compared with other shopping streets in other cities, this street is quite wide.
A good place to visit if your hotel is near the Kumamoto train station. It takes a 170-yen tram ride or about 1000-yen taxi ride. Most of the shops are under the arcade roof so it is a good place to be during rainy times....More
This arcade was just across the road from our hotel. It's a mixture of expensive and cheap shops. Lots of restaurants and cafes. It is always busy, but nothing different to any other Japanese city shopping arcade
If you like to shop, than Shinshiga Shotengai will bring amusement for hours on end. Neslted within the quiet hustle of Kumamoto downtown, you will find farmer's markets pairs next to department stores, the match of old and new, interesting urban exploration.
