Takegawara Onsen, which is about 15 minutes' walk from JR Beppu station, is probably the most traditional Japanese public bath. The entrance is photogenic. It is said that Hayao Miyazaki got the idea of "Sen and Chihiro" from this building. If you have time, I...More

I came here to try the sand bath. It was the only sand bath onsen I went to in Beppu, and it was quite relaxing (I fell asleep). I definitely would recommend coming here to try the sand bath. The shower and bath afterwards isn't...More

We went to Takegawara Spa for a hot sand bath on a rainy day. There were a lot of people and we were told that the waiting time was likely to be 2 hours. After we paid the admission fee, we were told to stay...More

Really nice, traditional onsen. In addition to hot spring baths they also have sand baths. It costs little extra, but worth every dime! I tried to go to the sand bath on the beach, but even if I came there at 16:00 and they are...More

The hot sands are surprisingly warm and relaxing. Building is old, but that is part of its charm. The procedures are self explanatory but make sure you bring a towel or you'll need to buy one there.

Came here one night around 8pm while I was staying at Beppu. This onsen is located within the red light district and the ancient structure can easily be spotted once around the neighbourhood. There is a choice of either the onsen or the sand bath,...More

Being a newbie to public onsen, my first observation was it does not match the facilities found in the private/hotel onsen. Nonetheless, it was reasonable clean and we had the bath all to ourselves when we went early in the morning. Being buried in warm...More

It is safe though I would not want to have my 8 year old having the weird experience of being buried alive . In addition the temperature maybe too hot for the child .
