- Teen TravelerSai Kung, China41 contributionsAuthentic, Fun, and BeautifulThis market was so much fun to walk through. I absolutely loved all the restaurants we went to, and I bought a few trinkets at some of the stands. It was very pretty to see all of the lights and the hustle and bustle going on. I also really loved the location because it was a five-minute walk from the monorail, and two minutes away from the downtown area. It was impressively sprawling, and since its in the city center, it is the easiest to get transportation from.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 September 2023
- travelerOrangeCounty183 contributionsTypical shopping areaThis place was huge and seemed to go on forever at points. There all sorts of side streets and continuing streets so bring your walking shoes. You have an outside street running north/south and then a few streets under semi cover for weather. Look for the fish market toward the middle of the main middle street. Very cool and you can buy your live lunch and have it cooked upstairs at one of the resturants. Quite an experience. Past that, shopping area.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 9 October 2023

You can purchase the fresh seafood on the first floor then bring it up to the second floor and one of the restaurants will cook the seafood for you. I really like what they did with Makishi Public Market. It's clean, organized, and has a lot of variety. The first floor is all market and the second floor is full of restaurants. You can even pick what you want on the first floor and have them cook it upstairs. They have a lot of fresh seafood here. I really feel bad for the coconut crabs they have in tiny containers. They are beautiful and unique animals that don't deserve it. There are a lot of Okinawan specific things here whether it be food or souvenirs.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 December 2023

There were many rave about the seafood market so we went to try today but was very very disappointed. Beware of the shop at the centre lane the last shop nearer to the lift. (the shop assistant can speak Mandarin). Firstly the price is very expensive. The shop who sold us the seafood over charged us and is not honest and didn’t inform us clearly about the cooking fees. We had one fish (half raw half steam, one moonlight shellfish, one tiger prawn. The total cost add up to almost 8000 Yen (we were told the fish is 2000 yen, the shellfish is 2000 yen and the prawn is 600 yen) and when we are at the shop before going level 2 to wait for the food the shop assistant already added 500 yen (cooking fees). But when we finish our meal we were ask to pay 1100 yen for cooking fees again. When we question them the lady who speak Chinese denies. Do note that the cooking fees is 550 yen per person. Don’t get con by this shop. We are very turn off my this as we didn’t expect this to happen in japan. But these people who mend the store were Chinese from China so don’t expect honesty la. And the next worst experience here is my hubby request for extra wasabi... i saw the waiter pass the wasabi from the plate where the customer had left earlier to another waitress and she put it on the saucer and serve to my hubby! It’s very unhygienic! We totally loss appetite. The waiter who took the wasabi from left over plate also ate the left over food from the plate when he was clearing the table. Don’t come to this stall if you visit here! Try other store!

Another classic example that good comments on web turns out to be a major disappointment. Went there last week and the market looks shabby and old. Then we heard shop owners speaking mandarin, cantonese and minnan language. We bought seafood from a Taiwanese owned seafood shops on the G/f and then seated upstairs where they prepared and cooked seafood for you. The place is again quite dirty with people smoking around you. Sashimi was ok but nothing out of ordinary. You get better quality buying at Aeon stores. The cooked seafood was a major set back ...definitely prepared by amateur chefs. The price wasn't cheap but after all it is a tourist spot so we anticipate it.
Seems most of the shops are now owned / operated by Taiwanese or other part of Asia except Japan. The quality of the food, services and atmosphere in this fish market are no where near Tsukiji or those in Hokkaido. If you want better sashimi and seafood in Okinawa, Itoman City Market in the south of Naha will provide you with a cheaper and much higher quality with authentic local style.

Makishi Public Market is nicknamed by the local folks as "Kitchen of Okinawa", it is truly a place of marvels & wonders.
G/F is the wet marketplace full of various meat & seafood vendor stalls. Many of these stalls employ part-time Asian overseas students who can speak both Chinese & English for convenient communications with the tourists. The 2/F is occupied by various local restaurants. Most of these are small yet cozy little joints, where both regular tables as well as Tatami (Japanese mat) style of seats are available. You can buy assorted fresh seafood from the G/F & then they will take your stuffs to your chosen restaurant at the 2/F for cooking & preparation.
I strongly suggest you try out the following exotic local gourmet :) [1] "Moonlight Seashell" - If you buy a whole piece, you can keep the very nice & HUGE seashell. A common way of serving is to have half of the shell meat stir-fried by butter, while the other half is for Sashimi (eating raw). [2] "Fugu" (Blowfish) - Deep-fried into crispy delicious chunks of meat! [3] "Umibudou" (literally "Sea Grapes") - A kind of local seaweed which is only found in Okinawa. Very nutritious. And of course, [4] Local Alcohol! Freezing Orion draft beers followed by "Awamori" (local distilled rice spirit) on the rocks are my favorites!

One seller was very nice and friendly before we decided to buy the food. After that, he was totally changed. He did not care about us and let other staff packing our food. One misunderstood about the price and he just ignore us. The oyster also looks old and not good condition.

Arrived on a cruise and this was the first stop. Took the taxi to Starbucks on the international street and took a 5 minutes walk. Was rather disappointed on the selection of local catches and felt the price was rather high. Took the escalator upstairs, most of the shops were closed Those in business were full.
So decide to try other location. Spoken to taxi driver with his limited English, a good place but he will not be spending his money there. Basically a tourist trap now.

The operating time was supposed to be 8am. We went there thinking markets would be bustling in the morning. We were quite wrong. Only two seafood stalls were opened. One offered 500 yen for a plate of sashimi. The eateries on level 2 opened only at 10am or 11am. We walked around and chanced upon Pork Tamago Onigiri Honten just round the corner. It became the best breakfast we had. As we were early, there was no queue.
After breakfast we went back to the market again and this time, the shops around the wet market were opened. There is a good variety of souvenirs, local bakery, sea grapes, dried seafood, tees, etc.
Do note the market will close on 16 June. They will move to another temporary location (formerly known as Nigiwai Square) and start operating 1 July. (See pic).

I arrived the Markishi Public Market in the morning at around 9-10am during my holiday. While I was taking a look at their seafoods and asking for the prices with one of the staff there, their old lady boss was weaving at my family members to ask them go away. Very very UNFRIENDLY attitude. I was surprised to see her showing a big simile in her shop's promotion poster in the market.
I would never come to this shop again. Finally, I chose the other shop closed by and spent a couple of hundreds USD.
I seldom take the time to leave comments. But this shop really made me upset and annoyed.

I have plan to visit Makishi public market, What is the price per kg for spiny lobster?
Written 18 May 2019
I have no idea. I am talking about eating lunch for sashimi.
For 1000 yen, you can get good and reasonable fresh sea food compared to back home.

I recommend to visit here and eat here. When you find any fish in the market, the first fool, you can cooked the fish at eat-in eat-in corner on the second floor. Person where you bought fish, he can arrange to eat-in corner.
I used to have clubs, shrimp and shell fish.

Hi, I just wanna to know is Pufferfish worth to try? Which store would you recommend? Price? Thank you !!
Written 8 March 2018
sorry, i can't say which stall is better, cause i only tried once.
I am so excited as it is my first time having pufferfish. (like a dream come true) They have various ways of serving it, sashimi, soup and etc.. Of coz, the recommended way is to have it Sashimi..
I will think it is good to try once in a lifetime. I really can't rate or judge the fuzu itself. Only can suggest to skip the Cooked Pufferfish as it really doesn't taste fabulous, or special

We would like to opt for buying some fresh sushi and eat it at the back of the market where travellers say there are allocated seats Can we but beer there to have with the sush?
Any other tips for snacking at the market? We don’t want to go to the upstairs restaurants

There is grocery store outside the market, just short walk away from the fishmongers. They will direct you to the place. No worries.

How does it compared to Taipei Fish Market. I am sure some of you guys have been to these 2 places including the one in Seoul as well. How does the Fish market in Taipei and the Makishi fish market in Okinawa compared in terms of quality, variety, prices and everything else? Thanks
Written 30 April 2017
In my opinion, the Makishi public market cannot be compared to the fish markets in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, or the other big cities of Asia. It is comparatively small, but located in a popular area. It will move to a new building in a new area in the near future and many of the businesses currently operating in Makishi are worried it will not attract as many tourists. I think if it were not located in its present location, many tourists would not visit. Remember that it is not only seafood in the market. If you are in the area, stop by and have a look.

For Sushi and Sashimi in the Makashi market area... which vendor prices are good and really fresh. I see prices from photos and videos but if anyone knows please share... it would be invaluable. We like...
Sea Urchins( I know in Hokkaido it might be better but it is still better than here in Nashville I am sure)
Scallops, Tuna (fatty ones too), Sweet shrimps and many others...
Good times to visit makashi market... and other suggestions?
Written 16 January 2017
There is another fish market in Naha (Tuna City) at the docks/port on the waterfront. It does not have as much fresh fish on display as the Makishi one, but it does not have as many tourists and is very reasonably priced. There are many small eateries there and an outdoor eating area. I think it's better for lunch than for dinner.

restaurant name is in Japanese can't decipher - but there's a lot of blue color displayed with an ad about "gold premium" beer. just looking at a picture I took of the place
