Great castle and provides great views of the city and the sea beyond. It would look even more impressive when the Sakura are blooming in spring. Fun way to get taken up part of the way via cable car or chairlift. A must do in Matsuyama

Matsuyama Castle may not have the grandeur of the more famous Himeiji or Kumamoto castle, but it is firmly my favourite Japanese castle. Walking through the several intriguing circles of defense & gates, one can imagine how formidable this castle was to the past invaders. Apart from strategically located openings for defenders to shoot arrows or firearms, there were also... More

Iyo-Matsuyama Castle retains one of 12 original main keeps in Japan – it is a gem of a castle with a vast complex of structures and defensive works. Taking the winding route into the Tenshukaku (main keep) was an exhilarating experience in a scene unchanged in 400 years! I stayed in a hotel opposite the castle moat and could see... More

Fab castle which towers above Matsuyama and is accessed via either the chairlift or cable car. Lots of steep stairs inside but the climb is worth it.

Unlike some of the other centre town castles, this one sits on top of a (mostly natural) hill with a large park around it. To the east is the cable car up to the eastern edge of the park. Walk 5 minutes to get to the castle from disembarking the cable car. There are some exhibit pieces inside the castle... More

We took lift to go up to the castle. It was a pleasant ride and once you get up to the tenshukaku in the castle, you can see the whole city with no obstruction. What a view it was. You can see Inland Sea as well from the castle. Lovely ground around it.

A lovely castle to visit even though it's had many reconstructions. Not as big as Himeji but it has an excellent display of armour and swords, there's even one you can handle to get the idea of weight. Recommended.
