I wrote a review about this amazing gem of a museum when I first visited but it's gone so I am reiterating my love now because I think it's worth it. The guide book gave this a rating of 'underwhelming' and 'provincial' - the first inaccurate, the second snobbish, there's nothing wrong with not being in a metropolis. This museum is firstly an extraordinary building which wows from the first step inside. The concrete and steel staircase could be cold and functional but is a thing of striking beauty which, try as I might, I just could not capture in my photos and the view from the cafe with its long low windows is a view I could look at all day. On our visit, there were three exhibitions which were all interesting and beautiful in different ways - 1. A gallery of photographs of local people, art and events which was fascinating and joyous and a celebration of life lived 'provincially' which I thought was wonderful and we spent a great deal of time here; 2. Kisling. WOW! An artist I didn't know and whose beautifully staged paintings stole my heart; and 3. Tsuguharu Foujita's Events in Akita is astonishing in the flesh. This is what we had travelled to see and it was definitely worth it - there are two levels from which to view the painting, one at eye level from a mezzanine gallery so as to take in the entire 20m length and from the floor looking up at it's glorious vibrancy. All-in-all this is a wonderful museum, small but oh so perfectly formed. If you want big and flashy and crowded and to see the exhibits through the lens of your camera phone, then this is not the place for you but if you want to wander through the beautiful galleries of an extraordinarily well-thought out art gallery, dive in because you won't regret it.

The art displays are on the first to 3rd floor. There is an entry fee to the second and third floor. I forgot how much but minimal. The displays were beautiful. The only one I can remember is the painting which occupied one wall of the second floor. The coffee shop had a very relaxing view.

The first floor gallery is free of charge but the second floor has a payment of around 1200 JPY. I would recommend this place only if you have extreme interests in art.

When I visited, I was surprised that I could not pay my entry with credit card. After a walk for an ATM, and two shop later, ATM didn't work at he first shop, I finally got in. The only impressive piece is the main one in the fist hall. The rest is deceiving, well presented but still ...I would not recommend the visit.

The museum, built by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, is truly stunning. It is a very modern building (opened in 2013).The only set back is that the museum is entirely dedicated to one artist that not many will know - Tsuguharu Foujita, a Japanese-French painter who did hang out with the likes of Picasso, Leger and Man Ray in Paris in the 1920s. His huge paintings of Akita winter scenes are nice, but, overall, the museum feels empty. The museum café is a good place to sit down for a tea and enjoy the arcitecture and a nice view.

as you enter the building, you will see a nice stairs constructions in front of you. Akita Museum of Art building was designed by the famous architect Tadao Ando. I can't stop taking picture of the stairs. When you go up the stairs and enter the first room you will see a jaw dropped huge painting of Fujita Tsuguharu. It was awesome. In this museum, I am more interested in the building constructions of the museum than the collections

It is quite a famous architecture. But we did not have time to get inside. as a walking distance from JR Akita, it is sure a place you must visit.

Unless you are an ardent supporter of modern arts painting, this museum (which is not a huge one) has little to offer. The large mural painting depicting the daily life and events of Akita is perhaps the only major attraction. Other exhibits are few and limited. The building design, especially the interior, is very modern looking. It is said that some visitors came chiefly to admire the architecture rather than the exhibits. I would not say that the layout is ugly but I also do not understand nor appreciate it.

Well the building from outside is just a plain form , but the moment you step in you will see the first wonder with the great stair case without any pillar to support it . And then on the 2nd floor you will see more stunning museum
Lounge like the water garden behind a glass wall with edgeless form integrated the city back ground with 2 small water fountains in the city garden , but the synergy between those elements concrete, wooden floor, glass wall and water is a real harmony for the human being , I could sit hours there just admiring the water surface with its small waves due to low speed wind blowing the water.
And then in the exhibitions hall you may find the masterpiece made by painter Tsuguharu Foujita as a mural painting EVENTS OF AKITA from 1937 with approximately 20 X 5 meters in size; and other paintings from the 18th century.
Natural light is also applied in the triangle form ceiling which gives a very delicate view in this unique building . We spent almost 4 hours spending in the Museum lounge and wondering the paintings exhibitions. With a very low entrance fees, the visit is worthwhile.

When I visited there was a free exhibition on the ground floor by local artists - Akita Fine Artists Association. The building itself was of interest itself and had been funded by Masaki Hirani and holds many works by Tsuguharu Foujita. The latter painted and drew in Paris, and parts of North and South America. There were many different styles and sizes of work, the biggest of which was a huge mural (about 3.5 x 20.5 metres) - Events of Akita. The exhibition was enjoyable and the view from the museum shop/cafe was also intriguing. No photographs were allowed unfortunately but there were some postcards of his work.
