Lovely little 'local' style town, not many tourists at all, so there is time to walk and photograph everything, sit in the foot baths for a little soak, walk through the forest up to the suspension bridge and then grab a bite to eat at a local restaurant.

This is a sweet little town just 30mins out of Fukushima-shi by bus. We stayed at the recently opened Yumori Onsen Hostel (great value, incredibly comfortable and super friendly) for three days in December. It snowed while we were there, which was magical, the river that runs through the heart of the town is beautiful. There are some nice walks to waterfalls in the area, and although there aren't a lot of restaurants in the town, the few that are there are really good - we particularly liked Miraku, a ramen shop that also serves Fukushima Gyoza (dumplings served in a circle) and Curry Gyoza (I've never heard of these elsewhere). The Lotus cafe is only open weekends but the lunch sets are great value and delicious (vegetarian curry with real basmati rice!). This town doesn't have a convenience store or many amenities, but it's a wonderful, relaxing place to stay for a few days, with a whole bunch of onsen to choose from to enjoy the local waters.…
