Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Lois helped make us the most amazing custom wedding invitations based on some Christmas cards we were inspired by in the gallery. Lois was fantastic at looping us in the right amount when we were making creative decisions. We asked for the cards in a ridiculously short window of time and couldn't believe the quality of the work done and that it was completed early! We are incredibly grateful to the La Caverna team and recommend it so highly as a place for creative people to enjoy.

We really enjoyed our lunchtime visit to La Caverna. After ordering our lunch we wandered around in the art gallery. The are many interesting carvings and paintings. Lunch was good but don't forget to finish up with an affogato! Delicious!

This was a lovely spot for lunch in a cool garden, and a look around the gallery. A real haven in a busy city.

I toured La Caverna Art Gallery on a Saturday morning. There's lots of art work by local artists on sale and for display. It is set in a historic building, Mandala House, which also serves as a base for the Society of Malawi, with a nice garden round it. It's a nice place to buy art, and learn a few things about the history of Blantyre, and by extension Malawi. The manager Godfrey Mpwanya was very helpful and entertained lots of queries from me (I am a history buff...). There is a café, Café Mandala, which sells a wide range of food though I only had a cup of coffee, and the prices weren't exorbitant. It operates until 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays (on weekdays, it closes at 4:30 p.m.) though I'm not sure whether these opening times apply to the café as well. A gem in Blantyre!

Spent an afternoon here exploring the art work on offer. The quality is great and they have a restaurant on the premises too.

What I love about La Caverna is its social enterprise approach to business. La Caverna not only features work from LOCAL Malawian artisans, but they buy the art at fair value from the artists. Profits are then reinvested into the gallery and supporting local causes. If you hate being hounded by vendors then La Caverna is a peaceful place to take your time, select what you want, and know that the artist is being paid fairly for their work and mass profits aren’t going into a vendor’s pockets instead of to the artist. Did I mention the food and coffee? The garden is an awesome place to sit and enjoy tea break or lunch and read about the history of Blantyre. Definitely one of my favourite places in Blantyre.

A good place to look as a museum but overpriced art work. Go to the market instead and buy great art and carving and fabrics for a fraction of the price. Since none of these artists are world renowned, it really does not matter whose name is on the canvas.

Hereabouts I agree with a former commentator, that varied and interesting places are few and far in between. The La Caverna Art Gallery has a large collection of local Malawian art and memorablia from times past. It's nearest rival in the literal and metaphorical sense is the Kwa Haraba Arts Café (Phekani House), within the city centre, some 10 minutes distant.

La Caverna is located within a historic, indeed original Blantyre house with splendid gardens even as now, in wintertime. I've bought hardback books unique to Malawi here including its flowers, fauna history and such.

Visiting this place goes beyond looking at artefacts and buying souvenirs. It is also about entering a very old house, quite typical of what was built decades ago in Blantyre. So I enjoyed all parts of my visit, including walking back to my hotel. Don't miss it!
