Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This tower is underrated. The outlook of the tower isn't in its glory days. However, the tower still gives you the aerial view of the city (Alor Setar).

This is the only tower, that when I visited at almost sunset, there is no one around. I get the whole sunset view to myself. For the locals here the tower may be boring, but for visitors the tower is the place to check out the river, the old buildings and the landscape (including the hills).

There is a fee to enter. You can go to the viewing area level or to the restaurant. Around the viewing area level (open air), there are few telescopes if there is no one around you can use it to your own and have a close up view of almost everything. The tower unfortunately has no explanation on the landmarks of the city. There are toilets at the viewing level.

Best time to go is in the late evening when it is windy, not hot and you can stay till sunset.

This is a major communications tower in Alor Setar and also has an observation deck accessible to tourists. If you’ve seen or been up a tower, this one is not much different. No question the observation deck provides good views of the city. Worth a look if in the city.

Alor Setar is not a town with a huge array of activities for the tourist. So it was a surprise when I found that the Menara Alor Setar has an observation deck and a restaurant. A surprise because I’d been here nine times before and none of the locals had mentioned it before. We’d just been to the Menara Kuala Lumpur, and this Menara is a lot smaller but given the geography of Kedah (it’s flat!) you can see all the way to the Straits of Melaka, and all the surrounding countryside from the 100m elevation. Prices are very reasonable (RM 10 for an adult, RM 5 for a child; less for Malaysians). There is a nice cooling breeze at the observation deck, and all round the deck are boards giving information about the sights to be seen. There is also a snack shop selling ice creams and drinks, and a souvenir shop. It’s perhaps the only place in Alor Setar where you can buy Alor Setar souvenirs and we got the caps, t-shirts, pens, pencils, and fridge magnets to prove it!

As well as the observation deck at the Menara you can also go to the next level up and dine at the revolving restaurant. We went for high tea, which is a buffet for RM12 per person, including the ride up. You sit in air conditioned comfort and watch the world revolve around you. The high tea is definitely an Asian high tea (laksa the day we were there) and not the Western idea, but it was good fun. For foreigners you should take this option as it is only RM2 more than the visit to the observation tower.

You would hardly expect to find a skyscraper in the middle of Alor Setar, which is little more than a country town, really. But here it is, a vain attempt to put this town on the map. When we visited, we were the only people here, so it is hardly a roaring success. But it does give you an idea of the lay out of the town, with the historic precincts arranged below. If in town, you might as well come up, but it is hardly a must see. Also, with Kedah being the rice bowl of Malaysia, the topography around the city is extremely flat, which makes the view less exciting than you would hope. So what we have here is a white elephant, worth a quick look for those in town.

Brought mom from JB to visit alor setar for the first time of her life, we went up to tower to give her the whole view of the city. Its was quiet, and the ticket was not particular cheap, there was no air conditioning up in the tower but it was ok as was quiet windy. Facilities are basic and quite old and tired look, overall ok staying for 20-30minutes.

Ticket for adult is Rm9, children is Rm5 and retiree is Rm5. On top of the tower it is not air-condition. The old type telescopes by Nikon is fully functional and free to use. Only downside is that the information displayed for places of interest could be further enhanced. Tower and surrounding are pretty run down, but it is still a good place to visit especially when you are in Alor Setar.

Located 543 ft above ground. You have a 360 degree view of Alor Star and areas around it. Take the bubble (transparent) lift to the observation deck located 289 ft to have a spectacular view of the city, vast paddy fields and the straits of Malacca.

Above the observation deck is a revolving restaurant open for public. However please contact them to make sure of their operating hours.

Tickets to the observation deck can be purchased at the bottom of tower.

Best time to visit is about 6.30pm and stay there till 7.30 for view the sunset.
