They came and conquer...they gave their lives for the future generations...buried both catholics...protestants. Spaces are running out buried closely next to each other...for/by families..relatives. Today..instead of burial...one could be cremated...later buried together with own family.

A walk around the many tombstones in this wonderful cemetery is a reminder of the terrible hardships endured by the early missionaries and pioneers. Amongst the many interesting tombs are those of Captain Francis Light himself, as well as a number of early Governors of Penang. Many of the tombs are of early missionaries. Over 33% of the tombs represent... More

It's quite a sad place to walk around. Unfortunately many of the head stones have been weathered making them difficult to read. Some of the graves have shifted, causing breaks in the stone. Many of these people died at a young age from diseases such as Malaria, typhoid or yellow fever. Captain Francis Light, the founder of Penang is interred... More

An old cemetery full of character not to mention a few of my relatives. From the lovely neo-gothic gate to the numerous and interesting headstones and monuments this place is worth a visit if you want to know something about the history of Penang. One monuments has an effigy of a resting dog which is said to have been based... More

This old walled cemetery, full of shifted tombstones is an interesting place to visit for half an hour to escape the hustle and bustle of Penang. As you walk beneath the shade of the many moss-covered frangipani trees you can reflect on the lives of the European pioneers who gave so much to this island, many years ago.

So the place might be closed on Sundays, but the rest of the time it is an awesome place to spend 10-15 mins, walking around the old cemetery and checking out the old colonial graves. the place is well maintained, and although there is little in the way of signage, you dont really need it.....its just an old cemetery after... This place looks beautiful from the outside, it is recommended in many books. Looked at the Penang heritage map (which mentioned opening hours for all attractions) not so for this cemetery. I assumed that it would be open but it was locked.
