Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

On a clear day you can surely see forever. The TOP of KOMTAR Penang did not disappoint for the views it offered at its observation deck at Level 65 and then at Level 68. The service staff did well to welcome and direct us up the skyscraper. The glass flooring at Level 65 might take some mind-over-matter persuasion before one steps onto it because we were 65 storeys above the street. Once this is overcome, then the glass walkway at Level 68 becomes a piece of cake. For the really brave, there is the option of walking outside along a section of the perimeter of Level 65, but not for me!

Its the shopping complex that time forgot. The year was 1980. They built a skyscraper as a symbol of prosperity of this island city. 40 years on, new modern out of downtown complexes emerge.
The state Government abd agencies still occupy most of the floors but the podium that once was a thriving shoppers haven are now left with small time traders. Not unlike Hong Kongs Chung King Mansion.

Komtar itself is in a bit of a time warp but there are two other interlinked malls so your selection of shopping choices is quite a lot.
And everything - clothes , shoes, phones, IT accessories, hardware, DIY - from top to bottom.
Worth a visit to soak in some local culture and retail therapy :-)

Tall building that you can see throughout the city as a landmark. Appears that most reviewers like me were going to the sixth floor where you enter The Rainbow Skywalk and Observatory Deck or the indoor theme park. I didn't bother with the other floors. If your going for the Rainbow Skywalk and Observatory Deck or the indoor theme park, then yes. Otherwise don't bother. This is the tallest building in Penang. From the outside, it looks old and worn out!

This place feels like it has seen better days. The ‘bones’ suggest it was or could be a super fun destination but has fallen into some disrepair. Totally worth a visit but hope that next we visit Penang it was been given some more love

You have few attractions in Komtar.
Skywalk , viewing gallery and rooftop called The TOP is main attraction.
The counter staff recommended us to take combo ticket that included Aquarium and Jurassic park as well.
Aquarium was reasonable, I don’t agree with some previous user comments that place is dirty or small, it’s reasonably good.
Jurassic is more for kids but not bad actually.
There was some carnival stuff and restaurants also, must visit in Penang.

I suppose most people do not know about this. One can go to the 3 rd floor ( city council offices) and get a visitor pass by leaving your Passport or Drivers
Licence. You then take the middle blue lift to the 60 the floor. The floor looks like it's going to be renovated but the views were breathtaking. Fantastic 360 degrees views.

Though it was touted as futuristic by its then proponents and beneficiaries, KOMTAR could also be considered the most egregious symbol of urban blight (rather than urban renewal) in Georgetown. Where tall buildings may be considered important in the constrained space of Pulau Pinang – such extreme monstrosities as KOMTAR, impinging on the architectural and cultural marvel that is central Georgetown, and the thinking that led to KOMTAR, were almost certainly Georgetown's greatest threat. It's unsightly, a commercial failure (businesses try to use the space, fail, and abandon it), and a real negative factor in traffic flow.
I have no experience with the office complex. But KOMTAR's public spaces have always seemed to be ugly, awkward, and sad. The adjacent Prangin Mall seems much cleaner, more vibrant and successful, and hardly the eyesore that is KOMTAR. (However, on a recent visit we were able to pick up a few deals at the Pacific departmental store in KOMTAR – such as size 12 Nike Air shoes being surplussed as not being purchased by mainstream customers of that store.)
Fortunately, not all of Georgetown was destroyed by such a mindset – and more recent efforts at revitalization of Georgetown's rich heritage are now taking a much more upbeat form.
IMHO, Georgetown would look and work much better had KOMTAR never been built in such form. As it is such a sad place, and still a drag on the community, should it be razed and be replaced by a properly conceived urban renewal project?
Five stars for Georgetown. 2.5 stars for Pulau Pinang's typical urban sprawl. Zero stars for KOMTAR.

To be honest, does Georgetown, Penang really need a 60-storey skyscraper to be considered a city of substance or consequence? Strangely enough, KOMTAR (acronymn for Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak) used to be Malaysia's tallest building before the twin-towers of Petronas in Kuala Lumpur came into being.
Today, KOMTAR remains Penang's sore-thumb and lingering eye-sore. The shopping centre that takes up its base is rundown and the general environment grotty. The viewing tower at the top used to be a legitimate tourist attraction, but it has become a shadow of its former self. Its entrance on the ground floor is hard to locate, being very poorly sign-posted. Look out for the Maybank outlet and the lifts are just beside it. There is a small entrance fee, which could be used to redeem for a tea, soft drinks and discounts for kitschy souvenirs.
The 360 degrees view from the top, however, is spectacular. Enjoy it for as long as it takes as this may be the only redeeming feature of this rather sorry attraction.

Could you tell me the easiest directions to get up to the skywalk when arriving at Komtar tower please
Written 8 November 2018
Take lift and go to 6th floor. You will land up in parking, take a left from there you will now e at the children amusement and some restaurants. There on the right side take steps, you will land up at the counter for Skywalk tickets. Staff will guide you from there. There are 2 skywalks one each on 65th & 68th floors. 68th won't be scary if you take on 65th.

Written 15 July 2017
I am very sure if you to Komtar they will guide you. They have upgraded the place. Sorry I can't help much with buses as I prefer to fly. Less hassle.

Hello,
No, I am sorry. But I don't live in Georgetown. And I didn't like Komtar that much.
Try to find someone in Georgetown, from the guesthouse or hotel you were staying to go there and find out the number.
Good luck!
