It was quite a long coach journey to get here from where our ship docked in Kota Kinabalu. When we arrived we were provided with a buffet-style lunch of Malaysian food which most people including me enjoyed but some didn’t. We then boarded our boats and set off on the river. As with all trips to see wildlife you cannot guarantee what you will see. We set off with hope that we’d see proboscis monkeys. After about 20mins we saw our first couple of proboscis monkeys. Over the next 90mins we saw more proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques, and (silver?) monkeys. At one point our driver eased our boat into a side-creek and I got excellent video of proboscis monkeys jumping across it. Overall an excellent boat trip and worth the long journey from Kota Kinabalu.

We just dropped by Klias River Cruise on our way from Labuan to Beaufort. When you show up, you can buy a full package for RM70 per person for coffee, tea & dinner as well as two river cruises. One before sunset to see the Proboscis monkeys and one after to see fireflies.
The cheapest option is definetely to go there yourself (~RM170 for organized tour). Transport to Beaufort from KK is about RM12 and then probably a taxi to Klias River Cruise, which shouldn't be more than 5-6RM/person (not sure though. There should also be minibusses to Menumbok ferry, they can drop you off at Kota Klias too.
The usual organized tours arrive at 4pm and the boat trip starts at 5pm. It ends around 7.30pm.
As we came there individually we had almost the whole boat for ourselves (organized tour on another boat). This was great and made the whole experience a lot better! We did see quite some Proboscis monkeys and were just 3 meters away from a male with his long nose. Also some lizards and other monkey.
After dinner (really good btw.), we went to see the hundreds of fireflies sitting on the trees and simultaneously sending off light. It was really cool and amazed me even more than the monkeys!

We did the Klias river cruise through Amazing Borneo as a private tour.
The local boat man was fantastic at spotting wildlife and attracting the fireflies!
We were lucky enough to spot the coucal bird, oriental hornbill, crocodiles, proboscis, long tailed macaque, silver leaf langur, kingfisher, water monitor and lots of fireflies!

Decided to go to this place for a road trip yesterday. It was a 2 hour drive from Kota kinabalu. After lunch in Beaufort Town we drove down another 15 mins to Klias River Cruise. To our shock, this place does not exist anymore! The sign board has decayed. It was only a small bridge connecting into the jetty area. The bushes were so long and scary with dried leaves and some parts of the attap was broken. When we went in, it's abandoned and it looked scary. Was thankful no crocodile and snake came into our encounter. Sg Klias River Cruise- a WRECK OF THE PAST!

Me and my Girlfriend did a Klias Wetlands Safari Tour starting from Kota Kinabalu. After the PickUp by the Tour Company, it took us about 2.5 hours to drive to the River. For tall guys like me (about 1.95m) the drive was exhausting since the Minivan is really small, luckily the van was not completely full, therefore I could take two seats (still really uncomfortable and painful to sit there for 2.5h). Upon your arrival, you will get some snacks and afterward, you will take a seat in the boat. The Boat cruise itself was a big disappointment. We only cruised for maybe 90 min till we went back. During the cruise, the efforts of the crew are focused on finding the advertised Proboscic Monkeys. AND THATS IT. After you find one of these guys the boat will stop and you have the chance to look at them for 30 min. You are not even really close to the monkeys, and they aren't really doing stuff. You just sit in the boat and glance at some brown spots in the trees. They will not show you anything else. You will not really drive up and down the river(maybe 700m in total). You will not see any part of the probably amazing river delta. You will not see any other part of the amazing fauna which lives in the river. Since there are fishing villages/huts/ships at the riverside you are not even feeling like you are in some national park oder wildlife reserve.
After this short boat ride you will get a basic malaysian dinner. Afterwards you will board the boat again for 15 min and drive in the dark to some fireflies. This part of the tour was amazing and the only reason why i give this tour two stars. Thus you drive back to KK for another 2.5h. To summarize: you will sit in a cramped car for a total of at least 5 hours, spend maybe 2 hours on the boat and get a basic meal for ridiciolous 200 RM per person. Unless you have never seen a monkey or a tree in your life-dont go there.
To the people offering this tour: Why didnt you show us this amazing place? Why dont you make it at least a 3 to 4 hours boat tour? And why was your advertised "traditional malaysian dinner" so lame? You could at least pour some effort into getting some decent food...

The Klias Wetlands tour is a popular afternoon-evening attraction for visitors to Sabah, judging by the number of boats on the river. It is about a two hour drive from Kota Kinabalu. On the way to the wetlands, we stopped briefly at a local market which was an interesting diversion. Upon arriving at our base camp, we were treated to afternoon tea and a selection of snacks and donuts. After these refreshments, we headed out onto the river in search of monkeys and other wildlife. It is worth remembering that you need sharp eyes and patience to spot the animals. Fortunately our guide Terrence and helmsman did a great job trying to locate monkeys over almost two hours. We found several groups of long tail macaques, and spotted a couple of silver leaf monkeys (which are known to be timid and shy). We saw a small group of Proboscis Monkeys. We were pretty happy that we saw these different species. Perhaps the highlight for our group was seeing about a four metre saltwater crocodile lazing on the river's mudflat. We were lucky to see it, as it was stopped by two young and quiet Japanese boys in our group.
After searching for monkeys, we returned to the base camp in the early evening for a Malaysian dinner, which was tasty and filling. After dinner, we headed back to the river to see the fire-flies. These were plentiful. Overall, a long tour, about eight hours from door to door, but worthwhile.

The Klias river cruise is very disappointing - it is a 2 hour drive to see the Proboscis monkey - whose features are difficult to figure out. The food served is average and the overall cruise is disappointing.

This was a long drive from our hotel - around 2 hours. It is a small river and they cramp you in this small boat to take you around. It is really hard to see the distinctive features of the monkey - would recommend you to completely skip this and not waste your time/ money on it !

This is the second time I have taken this trip. The first time, 18 months ago, it was the most beautiful peaceful day looking at nature in an unspoilt setting. We were taken by minibus from the Rasa Ria hotel and taken to the river. There were only 7 people on the boat and hardly any other boats. 4 toilets were provided at the small jetty and some lovely ladies provided a snack for us before we got on the boat and lunch when we returned.
Unfortunately it was a completely different experience this year. A large coach collected us from the hotel, 40 minutes late, which already appeared to be full as the passengers already on board had spread their belongings and children over all the seats. They weren't very welcoming but moved their belongings so we could sit down. The coach was very uncomfortable and didn't set off straight away.
We reached the river at the same time as two other large coaches and several smaller vehicles. It was the same jetty as last year with the same number of toilets and the same ladies catering but with far more tables and chairs than before.
We sat and had a snack and waited for the tour guide to let us know what was happening. We didn't receive any instructions from him and a group of us went and joined people who we recognised from the coach and made our way to the river. The tour guide appeared and loaded more and more people onto our boat which then set off without him. We had to return to the jetty to pick him up and then we set off. A very short while later we had to return to the jetty to pick up people from our coach who had missed the boat.
We set off again expecting to hear an interesting and informative talk from our guide but he said nothing. We went up and down the river looking for monkeys and then arrived at a sandbank where another tourist asked if she could get off and go for a walk. The guide asked us if we would all like to do that instead of looking for monkeys. Fortunately the majority of passengers said no and we returned to the search for monkeys. We did see some wildlife: proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques and water buffalo but they were outnumbered by the pollution in the river and drowned out by the noise of tourists taking selfies. It was difficult to see the wild life as it had gone dark by the time we got back.
We really couldn't bare to waste any more of our holiday going to another river to see fireflies so aborted the trip and took a taxi back to the hotel.

Visited two villages, took two boats, one to see proboscis monkeys, one to see fireflies, both great but latter was one of the stand out moments of our whole trip, the fire flies were simply awesome. Food was great (kids favourite) and people lovely. Booked through exotic borneo.

Love your review. Sounds like something I would say. Do tell me, solo traveler, are there any activities you highly recommend in Borneo. I am traveling with a group for 10 days and have a few days by myself in Kota Kinabalu before.
Hope you get this message
