While Matang Wildlife Centre was not my first choice of visit, i had high expectations of this place given some of the positive reviews from my prior internet research. What I actually experienced, I would say personally traumatising. Notwithstanding these animals are in rehabilitation and may be released into the wild later, they are confined to a really small cage... More

Matang Widlife Centre is located less than 40 minutes away from Kuching, so if you do not have much time to go far from the city, this is always a good choice. The collection of animals here is impressive and it serves as a good educating ground for the children!

Wonderful place to visit. Orangs, Sunbears, Gibbons, Macaques and more. This is a rescue centre and the work there is done by a small group of very dedicated staff aided by volunteers. I worked there for 2 weeks and was completely blown over by the commitment of the workers and fell in love with the animals who have all been... More

So uncomfortably hot on our visit in October; we couldn't find anywhere to top up our water or get refreshments either. The few animals we saw were totally inaccessible. I get that they are being rehabilitated, but the cages were heavily fenced off, it was no better than a visit to the zoo. We did spot a worker handling a... More

the animals looked sad and sick, the horn bills had no color and the orangutan did not lift his head to see what was happening, it appeared as though he was hiding

Not worth the visit at all! The way the animals were caged up and poor maintenance of the surroundings and the cage were just depressing. Only one of the baby orangutan were swinging around happily (i guess) in the cage. All other animals were just sitting in a corner with a pitiful expression. When my friends and I were passing... I was taken here by my guide but really wish I hadn't gone, it's a depressing place with depressive animals, poor poor Peter the Orangutan stuck in a small cage, I couldn't bring myself to take a photo of him, other Orangutans hiding their faces against the wall, staring into space, Alligators supposedly waiting release in small enclosures, filled small... All in all, this is worth attending as it is probably the best way to see many of the animals from Borneo. They are in enclosures and seem to be very well taken care of. They have a large medical, vet. clinic on site and are training some to be set free in the wild. Young people from England and... More

We dropped in here like lots of other people because we wanted to see the orangutans, being fruit season they are hard to find. It is very depressing seeing the sun bears and cats in small dank cages with no light. The large male orangutans appear to be completely despondent and one was hanging by hands on the barred door...
