The cemetery is hidden behind a wall, 5 minutes outside the old city and opposite the Jewish cemetery. It's very shabby and in bad shape, but hey this is Morocco, it is shabby chic and that's its charm. It's also a bit quieter being walled...More

Compared with its Jewish neighbour next door, the Christian cemetery is in a poor state of repair and in need of much remedial work for restoration. The site is located at the taxi rank just a few yards from Bab Doukkala gate, and is easily...More

The cross at the wooden door is small. You have to find it.Just outside the medina.Hidden behind huge walls. It is a surrealist place.Overturned stones, polished marble on the other wall.A beautiful grave, surrounded by plants, the wall decorated with roses escaping to the sky.Or to paradise.Mertens,Alain is the name.The...More

On entering you are struck by the dereliction, although some graves are recent (October 2015) and one has cats! Interns are from France mainly although some Brits and Italians spotted. Interesting architecture too. Abandoned tombs too. One or two photos of Italians also. See images....More

Set in the old city and by the old walls it is a very calm and tought provoking place. When you read the names and especially the dates on the head stones it makes you imagine what it must have been like, to be a...More

Although this was my third visit to Essaouira I hadn't stumbled across the cemetery before. It's well worth a visit if you find it open, however - the entrance gate is on the left just outside Bab Dokhala. It's the final resting place of Essaouira's...More
