The archeological digs were very interesting but the area around it is so poor that it would discourage tourists from coming there. This whole area of Lambayeque holds do much tourism potential but it will have to do much more to attract them. The whole area around Chiclayo is poor and dirty with lots of garbage strewn along the roadsides.

Ventarron was the site of a culture estimated at ca. 2000 BCE. The site is worth visiting to see the oldest mural paintings in the Americas. Amazing they survived- the site is relatively small and the murals limited, but it's a good place to start when visiting the many Huacas (temples) around Chiclayo to understand the chronology of the cultures.

Our 2 days in Chiclayo were filled with interesting sites and activities. From visiting Tucume, to the Lord of Sipan Museum..to birdwatching and nature viewing in Chaparri, we had a nice mix of history and nature! Of all the things we did, though, I think I was most impressed by the Ventarron archaeological site. When people visit Northern Peru, and... More

This site isn't huge like some of the others in the area, but it is still interesting. They offered a guided tour, but only in Spanish. Luckily, our driver for the day translated for her, which made the visit much more educational.

This place is worth a stop to see the murals and mud construction. The site is approximately 4,000 years old so do not expect perfection. If you are out visiting the antiquities certainly stop here to see the paintings on the walls. If there was a fee it was paid by the guide. I did not pay attention at the... More

This archelogical site is off the beaten path but if you go to Huaca Rajada, it is on the way and should be included. It is small and still being excavated but with very little government support. The entry fee is very modest, guide included at no charge, and even though contributions are not solicited it helps to support the... More
